Default Chinese torture

Ok not quite, but for the last week I've been experiencing a metallic rattle over any small bumps in the road in the rear left of my 05 WRX. I'm running the STD coilovers and the rear is lowered slightly on stock wheels.

I've pulled the rear seats out, pulled the C Pillar out to check if it was related to the seatbelt with no luck. I've even driven round the block with dad in the boot trying to find the damn rattle. All I can put it down to is something knocking in the suspension which is traveling up the coilover into the body.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what it could be? I haven't changed anything on the car in that time, the only difference has been that I've been carrying passengers a lot for the last week (my parents are visiting from the UK).

Anyone got any ideas?? I'm going insane on the bumpy roads road here!

Get the car on a hoist and leave about 50mm from the wheels to the ground.
Use a metal pipe under the tyres to provide loading on the suspension.
Could be the case of a noisy bearing in the top hat.

Something I've experienced in the past and it drove me bonkers!

Its the jack in the boot - mine does it too - I thought my car was scraping at first, but its nowhere near the ground - its the jack/tools doing some wierd rattling/resonation causing it.

Well - i cant say for sure its the same in your case, but thats what was making noise in mine.

I hope you've compensated your dad for him riding in the boot

Well I made him dinner and gave him drinks all night if that counts? And anyway it's in his best interests because he has to put up with it when I'm driving them round everywhere!!

Completely forgot abount the jack in the back, I'll give that a shot and if not I'll test the top hat bearing.

Pillow balls making noise is my guess.

This is NORMAL for many coilovers.. when you replace rubber mounts with metal bearings, NVH is increased.

Can you describe the sound in more detail?

I get a sort of squeeking noise when i go over very bumpy surfaces....e.g. a carpark with heaps of pot holes and speed bumps...

Started with just the rear, but i can hear it from the front now too....bit annoying is all...

(I'm on coils too...)

Well its more of a knock than a rattle. Coming from quite high in the cabin by the sound of it. Definitely only on one side and only when the rear suspension is active. So if I go over a speed bump it is quiet when the front goes over, but makes noise when the rear goes over.
