Default FORGED? or not...(EJ20K)

I have used the search function here, and although there is alot of info regarding different model ej's and what's got what, I couldn't seem to find a diffinitive answer to my question.

which is.

I have a EJ20K motor for my project (see thread http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/general-...i-project.html ) and I want to know does this engine have forged internals (pistons only?). I assumed it did as I thought vIII STi onwards all had forged internals but it appears I may have been wrong.

According to many and varying internets articles:
FORGED
not forged
FORGED
not forged
FORGED
not forged
FORGED
not forged
FORGED

so if anyone can answer difnitively that would be appreciated!

cheers
Josh

Forged & I'm pretty sure open, don't worry you've got the Wholly Grail of the early engines, one thing you MUST remember if you've never had a turbo car before is that you MUST let it warm up while driving before hitting boost or it will die in no time and if you've never had a really quick car before you will have a smile from ear to ear that won't come off for weeks.

thanks heaps!
You wouldn't believe the amount of forums/pages that are saying both forged and not forged!!!
No I have never owned/driven a turbo car- so thanks for the heads up!
I have only been in one STi before, a mates dad's peanut- pretty much stock and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face after that, so I'm pretty keen to drive mine!!

Thing is.... EJ20K was used in V3/4 STI and ALSO V3/4 STI-RA

Only the STI-RA got OEM forged pistons AFAIK. Regular STI got cast pistons.

Open deck motor.

yeah i keep reading different things... everyone says something different.
I've realised it doesn't really matter as I have decided to stick with conservative mod's like upgraded TMIC, intake & exhaust etc for the next few years (whilst still at uni).
Once i'm working full time and can throw some money at it, ill look at doing a rebuild similar to Rossco's and have all new forged internals anyway....then I can put 2 bar through it

Nah, STI Drop forged, GTB supposedly press forged WRX cast, possibly that was the case with V2 STI cos there was a V2 WRX RA & STI RA I think

Fins damaged in several spots on current tmic, & improved tmic = colder air = better performance = happier driver.

V3 is same old opendeck non forged block.

From the research I did ages ago, only the 1st gen were forged & closed deck in the STI RA. V2 onwards were not forged and open deck. There is a table around on the www showing engine numbers/cars they were in/ and if they were forged or CD.

TBH even if you did grab a forged one, its now nearly 20 years old. Better off buying 207 short and slapping that in.
