Buying a wrx but which one ?

So in the very near future im planning on making the move to the wrx, only question is which model. Originally my plan was to get an EVO 8 MR but due to insurance $$$$$$ being almost double a wrx.. decided against it. Previously i owned a 04 RS impreza. So im looking for atleast a slight change in model.. these are my options:

06-07 STI
08/09 STI
new 2012 wrx

I understand the 08/09 STI had a few issues (ringland failure and occasional blown motor) but this was only a small % of owners right ?

opinions appreciated

09 sti

mitchwnz 20-03-2013 01:12 PM

Agree... 09 STI... Don't bother with a WRX, you will want the 6 speed, Brembo's, DCCD etc.

Soksta 20-03-2013 01:15 PM

Agree with Mitch's post above.
Better to start with the fruits on the car already, rather than adding them one by one or as funds permit.

06 STI, Looks way better! :P

CM_92 20-03-2013 01:46 PM

06 STi Looks much better! But the 09 is newer...

I've got my 06 STI for sale, PM if interested in more info ;)

huggy_b 20-03-2013 01:49 PM

Does it specifically need to be an EVO 8? Because of them being import only jobbies, insurance will generally be a tit. There might be a pretty neat EVO 9 for sale soon....what budget you working with?

JDM_STYLE 20-03-2013 02:00 PM

Buy my S204 ;)

06 STI....

Looks a shit ton better than the horrendous atrocity that is the 09.

Actually, they both look pretty shit until you start modding...

Ignore me lol

s20525xxx 20-03-2013 03:30 PM

Even I have a 08 STI, I still think performance wise, u should go for low km 07 STI, save some $$$ for mods. But a hatch is always more practical than sedan, and it's newer.

08 STI without a ECU flash would have piston issue in long run, plus Subaru/Toyota had lots of corners on 3rd gen STIs, ie noisy tyre, rubber synchro, no tranny oil pump, rather soft suspension/bushing. BUT it comes with wider wheel, much better tmic, better interier, bigger turbo.

red dragon2002 20-03-2013 04:57 PM

Depends what u want it for...

I would get a emo x

Blade 20-03-2013 11:43 PM

Wow, I know exactly where you are coming from as I was just in the same situation. How much do I spend? Where do I stop? I originally was looking for a 09-10 STI. Figured the car had done the worst of its depreciating and I got the full blown race spec.

To be truthful what I found was they don't depreciate 14% each year for the first 2 years like most cars and the extras were just over kill. Really depends on if u want / need from your car. a daily, a sunday driver or a project?

By the time crunched the numbers and all the crap I settled on a 13 WRX S Edition.
Had all the fruit, no previous owners and a good drive away price, compared to a second hander. Basically the same performance and output as an STI but without the go-cart suspension. But hey each to their own. I wanted a daily for winter and I am not a huge fan of mods or screwing round with cars.

EvO 2G 21-03-2013 08:25 AM

Well originally i was hoping for a budget of around $30k but as ive started to look around carsales, classifieds etc i look at a 06/07 sti for around 25k then i see oh theres a 08 for 28k, theres a 2010 for $33k and so on..too many options and by the end of looking im just as confused as when i started !

The car will be used as a daily driver for the misses to get to work, i dont see much point in having it just as a weekend car and sit in my garage collecting dust.

So here are a few ive picked out so far, but as the prices begin to get up to the 35k+ mark i think i can buy a BRAND NEW wrx or atleast an 08/09 sti for around that price.. fair enough some of them have some nice goodies but the 2012 wrx makes very similar power to the 07 sti.. @blade my thoughts exactly.

WRXMatt 21-03-2013 10:52 AM

Hmm guess it depends what shape you like. Buying a new WRX would be very nice. Would be a very nice daily driver. If your more into modding and want something that is fast and handles very well then the 05/06/07 STI would be better. It proberly wont feel as new though.
If you want something nice to drive daily, feels new and has good power, think you will be better off with the 2012 WRX.
Although with the money you would save with buying a 05/06/07 STI you could spend a nice amount of cash on Wheels, suspension, turbo, DVD player, all that kind of stuff.

drewgong 21-03-2013 12:12 PM

i like the 05, good price, not too molested, decent k's for age.. whatever you choose get it checked out! dont buy someone elses problem

Sharpy.au 21-03-2013 12:42 PM

I'm trading mine in soon so if someone was to offer me more than trade in I would take it and they would be getting a very sweet deal. Just something to consider if you are looking for an 05 STI, low km's, excellent condition, stock etc. etc.

reconus 21-03-2013 01:46 PM

FYI this guy lives in Tamworth, which is in NSW.

Unless he doesn't care if he purchases from W.A.

Would recommend checking rexnet aswell.

mitchwnz 21-03-2013 01:53 PM

I love all the comments about how New STI's aren't as good as pre 2007.. shit somebody tell Subaru that they're wasting their time with anything new and to go back to making 9+ year old designs.

Rexxar 21-03-2013 01:54 PM

I would go the other way and get an Evo 8MR or even Evo 9 as they are AUDM and insurance would be cheaper etc

EvO 2G 21-03-2013 04:35 PM

what do you guys think about this if i could get it for 25k ? what is too many kms in your opinion ? what should i be aiming for ? <80k ?

add another $1200-1500 for the 100,000km service unless it's already been done.

:)

No. But you already knew that :p

Bigger breaks are fine but don't add to the usual "numbers" people love to quote about "performance" and "speed" etc etc

The 6 speed gear box worries me personally. Few people mentioned they have a nasty habit of going bang but that could be on a specific model.

You have the win on the DCCD. No denying that. Further, I felt the entire interior had a nicer class to it.

Justifying the $$ for the above, I couldn't. Would love to be rich n go yeah whatever, not the case. Not going to lie, little jealous though.

Do some more research and actually listen to people...

5 speeds go bang... 6 speeds are bullet proof

STi for the little bit extra money. Get it checked by a reputable workshop, skids...

But please, do more research and actually listen to people...

Like Mitch, he got a wrx first, tried to mod it, gave up, bought STi....

My thoughts...

Ps, love you Mitch

More to your own personal preferences really. If the mods are done well by a reputable shop and they are mods you are after than you are saving some money probably. That one you linked to seems good, over priced though IMO. The mod list is pretty standard and good quality from the looks of it. New rear struts is a bonus, will mean they don't knock like most 05-07 STI's of that mileage

EvO 2G 24-03-2013 09:05 AM

yea i agree i think its a bit over priced.. hoping to pay somewhere around the 25k mark for a stock 06 sti

RS_207 24-03-2013 09:30 AM

Good choice!! Though you couldn't go wrong with an RS :)

98kellrs 24-03-2013 01:38 PM

Good choice on the STi, as someone who owns a WRX I can tell you from experience that you will very quickly get frustrated when you learn how fragile the tranny is on the WRX. :(

It's got me to the verge of selling my WRX to upgrade to an STi.

I agree here in principle.....sorta !

I have a 13 WRX. Im very happy with my purchase. I had the opportunity
To have an extended drive of a friends 08/09 STI and while the go fast bits
6 speed and extra strength in the build of the motor are unquestionably a big step up over the WRX...IMO didn't didn't translate to much for the
daily driver who likes on occasional fang. If I was doing regular track days the benefits of the STI are undeniable. On that basis I decided on a new WRX rather than an older STI. I'd like to replicate some of the suspension improvements, WRX handles like a boat.....but again for the day to
day grind its comfortable and seems to feel a little better with a bit of pace and
commitment.

I couldn't afford a new STI at the time of buying my WRX but if funds were no issue I'd have bought one without a doubt.

Regards
