Digging up an old one I know.

Looking at doing a Mishi radiator as well. Did you do the fan shroud & fans? Can you keep the stock fans/shroud with these radiators? Was going to do it properly and to the radiator, fan shroud & fans, silicone pipes etc.

Any reasons not to do that as opposed to keeping the stock fans?

This is for the X-Line 3 row radiator WRX/STI 01-07.

Or should I be looking at the Koyo alternative instead.

I kept the stock fans and shrouds to answer one part of your question, but not sure about the benefits of new fans etc.

Cheers mate.

Here are some more pics of it. Only concern is that with the design of the shroud, it blocks a percentage of the radiator from flow when cruising. Basically the air passing through but getting blocked.

Not sure how much of an impact that has, but not ideal I would say. I believe the OEM fans suck through the radiator (makes sense!) instead of pushing hot air out.

Nice piece of engineering though, I have to say.

Cheers

Rich, did you ever install the shroud along with your radiator?

I didn't, no. I read a lot that those fans, while looking like a nice piece of kit, are not as good as the OEM fans? I didn't want to risk it so i kept the OEM ones in place.

Only issue I have had is with the Mishimoto rad I got, 53mm X-Line 3 row, as everyone says, that top radiator hose sits really close to the power steering pulley, even when trimmed up nicely.

You will want to monitor it closely over a few days, and especially when doing track work and throwing the car around. If you have shitty engine mounts, it will likely touch and pierce the hose.

You could probably get away with going a smaller radiator that isn't so fat and achieve the same results. I think Koyo do a 36mm Hyper Core or something?

Quote:
Koyorad is always making improvements to their products and have revised their 53mm thick standard core version with the new 36mm "Hyper" core. The revised core has an increased fin and tube count for improved heat dissipation. This decrease in core thickness reduces overall weight while increasing air circulation and engine bay space.
Probably more efficient also in the sense that you're not putting a bigger radiator and creating a more tigthly packed engine bay. I probably should have thought it out better.

I have installed the mishimoto rad and thermostat with standard fan's in my GC8, very happy with the outcome, sits around the 80 degree mark in all weather, with the A/C on.

Cheers for the input, as I have a GC also. From the looks of it the filling port is on the radiator now, and not on the external tank like on a standard GC radiator?

No mate - mine is still filled at the stock location - no filler on the radiator. Looks more like the legacy one on the mishi site

Mishimoto Aluminum Radiator for Legacy Turbo, 1990-1994, by Mishimoto

thats a bit like late model SG foresters. They have 2 pressure caps. one on the top of the radiator, and one on the header tank. Where as early SG only has the one cap on the header tank.

With setups with 2 pressure caps, its VERY important to have an equal or lower pressure cap on the highest point in the system. If you have a higher pressure cap at the highest point, you can get situations where any air in the system will not naturally bleed out.
