Default 2002 WRX Fuel economy

Hi guys, I am new to the forum and to Subaru WRX.

So my issue is that my standard Rex has terrible fuel economy. Running on the freeway at 100km/hr the car is using 20litres/100km traveled. As far as I know the car is standard other than a larger cat back exhaust.

The previous owner appears to have driven the car hard. The car engine wise appears very strong. It runs real hard.

As this is my sons car and he can't afford the fuel economy that the car gets I am looking for suggestions on where to start who to go to to sort out. I am thinking there is something wrong as all the data on the net suggests highway running should be around 10litres/100km.

Where do I start.

Thanks
Chris

Do you have tools and know-how to be able to do work yourself (to replace sensors and so on), or are you looking for recommendations of where to take the car to have it looked at?

Matt.

I was going to say get the sensors checked, 02 sensor etc. Get the tune looked at through ASG, Evo R, ensure it's running in closed loop once warmed up.

Default Economy

Thanks for the response guys.

Firstly I can work on cars and have heaps of tools. But my preference would be to take it somewhere that charges reasonably.

I don't have a manual either.

Once I get familiar I can then start work on the car myself.

This may help to visualise it (apologies if you are already familiar), but you can see where the sensors are, 02 front and rear in particular:

When these fail, it should cause a check engine light, so if you have nothing, it's possibly tune related. Does it smell like it's running rich all the time? Check the injector seals?

Can't really think of much else if it's just got a cat back.

Note: With your 2002 - There won't be a cat pre-turbo which is a good thing.

Smells rich, engine check light has come on, did the remove battery lead trick to get rid of it.

Also the ram air scoop is missing.

It will have a stored code, one of the guys here can read the code using a OBD scantool, to see what is whinging, and then go from there.

Might be able to sort it all out by just changing out a sensor.

Default Code

Sounds like its worth going and purchasing a scanner. Extract the code for now and probably use it again later.

Are there any good low key shops around that anyone can recommend.

Could probably buy one from Auto One, etc etc for crackpipe prices, otherwise:

AU CAR Engine Fault Diagnostic Scanner Auto Code Reader OBD2 Scan Tool MS509 | eBay

Will do the trick.

In the meantime - Doug @ STechnic (Maddington), Mao @ Evo R (Bentley), Rob @ Platinum (Cockburn), Sean @ ASG (Malaga), will all sort it for you.
