Are you sure that getting a compression test and having that come back all clear is going to be a sign that the ring lands won't shit themselves 6 months down the track?

Sure, any car you buy could go dokdok at any minute but given the fail rate of the 08 STi they are best avoided in my opinion.

Im not saying its 100% safe, but having comp test is better than nothing. We all know that one of the common reason to sell ur car is there is sth wrong with it. From my experience, 08+ sti failed I know of is cause by owner with little mechnical sympathy. 11+ stis can also have ring land failure, i think they have slightly stronger head studs and piston rings than 08 sti.

If op can afford 11+ that's perfect. But a low km 08 sti with good comp test result is not a bad option.

Im no expert, just wanna give some help too

Default 2005 STi

I would go the 05 Sti, as stated by most they have proven reliability.

sure we can all say the 08 is worse than the 11+ but the 11+ hasnt had the time to put the km's on the clock and prove its reliability.

i will always go for what is known rather than the unknown

Some good information above. Cheers guys.

I'm only test driving this 08 STi on Friday. I'd rather not rush an investment like this.

2011+ is getting a bit above my budget.

Budget is $27K + what ever they give me trade in on my 2004 Ford Territory.
I'd say between $4k and $5k trade in value.

Hence why I'm looking at the 2008 STi for $32k

Other option is a 2009 WRX for $22k and dump $8k on modding it.

Either way it's a win win I'd just prefer to start with a STi as a base platform this time around.

Buy an 05 Sti, you can get them for around 20-24 pending condition. Personally I repeat personally my favourite shape, comes with all the updates from the 2006/2007 Sti while retaining the EJ207.

If you want to spend 8k on modding a wrx for roughly the same price as an Sti buy the peanut drop 8k on that and win. You'll more then likely have a nice around 260whp, some nice rims and coilovers and a car I find very easy to live with.

Buy a wrx for looks and to keep it stock, if you want to mod start ahead of the curve.

08 sti had problems because of the tune. It was fixed by dealerships. It would pull all fuel at high rpm.

I would go an 08 sti personally. Just get it checked by stechnic.

Its going to be 2014 tomorrow and if a used MY08 STI was going to suffer a ringland failure it would have happened by now I am betting.
