2005 WRX STi or 2009 WRX Non STi

Hello,

I'm back again and this time it'll be my 4th WRX and 5th Subaru including my old Legacy GT.

Simply drawn in my the sexy exhaust note, practical 4 doors "got a family" and fantastic performance that the WRX's offer.

Now as the title says I'm looking at either a 2005 WRX STi or a 2009 WRX.

Technically they offer almost exactly the same performance.

2005 STi
Power = 195kW@6000rpm
Torque = 343Nm
Weight = 1475 kg
Power to Weight ratio = 132.2W/kg
Acceleration 0 - 100km/h = 5.5s

2009 WRX
Power = 195kW@6000rpm
Torque = 343Nm
Weight = 1410 kg
Power to Weight ratio = 138.3W/kg
Acceleration 0 - 100km/h = 5.3s

Both would set me back between $20 - $30k depending on condition/mods etc.

Am I missing anything? Is there any good reason why I should get the STi or just go straight to the 2009 WRX? This seems to be a great buy for a non STi WRX.

*Yes STi's do have nicer brakes.

I've even seen the 2009's going for around $22k on Gumtree.

Depends what your gonna do with it. Any track work planned?

Also one is a hatch the other is a sedan. Different cars to drive.

Difference between the two cars is more than just brakes... I'm sure you know that.

Neither car weighs anywhere near 1880kg that's heavier than a falcoon/dunnydoor.

What will you be using the car for?

This seems to be the big question no body is referring to when planning cars & mods, however is definitely the most important...

No Track work at all.

I'll attend cruises and probably go on a few trips up to Mundaring‎ but thats all.

Not sure if the hatch vs sedan thing is that much of a deal?

I know it's not just brakes, STi's do have some other fruit but is it justifiable to spend the same amount of money on a 2005 car vs a 2009 car.

Sorry about the weight my bad. * Edited.

STi has more better stuff than just brakes lol

Depends what you want to do...
If you want to mod/tune and track it, then STi for sure...it's beast, and stock vs stock will be heaps faster than any wrx any day.
Sti has better drivetrain, suspension, links, control arms, etc etc, it's geared towards performance.
To get the handling of an STi in a wrx you will have to spend a fair bit on suspension/brakes, then add engine/drivetrain, and the list goes on....

If just daily the 2009 wrx is newer and has better features etc etc, you can still mod it to be beast but will cost you half your bum lol...
if you don't want to mod/tune etc then it is a newer/nicer car and would be the go....but I give you a month of seeing faster nicer looking/sounding/going wrxs around you and you will give in guaranteed ;)

Remember most of the wrxs on the cruises are quite done up and beast!

edit: even though the STis are built with performance in mind, it's still very daily driveable...I'd go the STi

2005 STI has EJ207 motor has forged internals. however is only 2L

id go the 05 sti.

My two cents..when comparing these two, the year doesn't really matter, it's more like STi or non STi
You might find that your wrx will lose more value per year than the 2005 STi... ;)

Edit: if it's the blue 05 Sti going for 25k, it's mint and low kms too! bargain!

Good point Jezza. No I'm not a track driver, will no doubt attend the odd cruise - 2 maybe 3 a year. I do enjoy the roads up in the hills and the odd little blast on the freeway but I'm a bit past my younger hoonigan days now.

Cheers for the input guys. Looks like its STi all the way.

RJ999 30-12-2013 04:45 PM

looking at your signature on the posts....looks like it's time to add STI to it huh
