vehicle inspection @ performance workshops

what are the benefits? i was gonna get a full master check from RAC but friend said i should just go to a workshop like hyperdrive or something to get it checked it..
the car in question is full stock so would it be beneficial for me? thanks.

Chaddy 22-01-2007 10:20 PM

Yeah i certainly would... i got Steve at MMS to have a look over my rex before i bought it. They can hook up the laptop to check things like error codes, AFRs which im pretty sure RAC don't have. Plus they know the car mechanically inside out and a quick spin round the block with Steve driving will highlight any clutch slipping or gearbox issues.... the man can drive hey

stebaun 22-01-2007 10:22 PM

how much was it?

should i do both rac and get someone to check it out?

WRXTASY 22-01-2007 10:25 PM

A compression test would not go astray if you want to be 100% sure that the piston ring lands are intact.

Any workshop should be able to do one.

PRODIGY 22-01-2007 10:25 PM

If you are going to get the car checked out before you buy it, it is probably a good idea that it's looked at by someone who is familiar with Subaru's.

I know Tenagah Motorsports in Wangara do pre-purchase checks.
It is also beneficial that you take the car to the workshop so they can put it up on the hoist and have a proper look underneath.

Chaddy 22-01-2007 10:25 PM

$50 from memory... took bout half hour and i got it up on the hoist which was handy to check out the underbody. I don't think you'll gain much from an RAC inspection if you're reasonably confident in your own ability to pick up major body issues like rust, panel damage, signs of respray, etc.

stebaun 22-01-2007 10:27 PM

should i still get an RAC test? do the workshops do all the tests that rac does like brakes etc and headlight check etc

Fozzy 22-01-2007 10:28 PM

Im sure you could test all that stuff yourself.. Most of the things the RAC check do are visual.

Forget Rac they don't know shit just take it to a good w/shop.

stebaun 22-01-2007 10:41 PM

hmm ok i think im sold
which workshop should i take it to? i live SOR but the guy lives in joondalup which is very far from my place so i guess we have to take it somehwere near joondalup..

As mentioned before, Tenagah Motorsports in Wangara. Thats pretty close to Joondalup.

WRP10 22-01-2007 11:43 PM

Had my car looked over by RMS before the purchase and i honestly think they found a bunch of shit that the RAC wouldnt have, being a Subaru specialist really helps

And they are in Carlisle

urabus 23-01-2007 07:46 AM

Tenagah in Wangara or Race Torque in Wangara will be the closest.

stebaun 23-01-2007 09:16 AM

tenagah can only do it next week so getting race torque to check it tomorrow :) thanks guys

B4GT 23-01-2007 03:58 PM

Fats Motorsports in wangara should be able to help you out also

stebaun 24-01-2007 11:49 AM

all clear just a couple minor things
hopefully i can drive it soon :)

WRXTATIC 24-01-2007 12:10 PM
Forget Rac they don't know shit just take it to a good w/shop.
Really? Perhaps you should consider that RAC inspections are made by fully qualified mechanics, with a broad range of knowledge across many makes and models. Consider also that they DO NOT STRIP THE CAR DOWN in order to inspect every single component, that the detail of report depends on how much the consumer wishs to pay and the limitations not having xray vision brings.

Yes, there will always be some problems that slip through the gaps, but on the whole the product and service delivered is value for money.

Even performance workshops have limitations

Yes he does work for the RAC (as do I) therefore he knows what he is talking about.

I can only guess that you have had an RAC inspection done before and wern't happy with it if you are bagging them????

Shinobik 25-01-2007 11:09 AM

When I sold my car and the buyer did a full RAC comprehensive inspection on my car ( mr-2 gt ).

I was watching him do the inspection, honest to god you could do all the stuff yourself!!! suppose I advise these RAC inspection for people that dont know how anyfing about cars.

Also in the "comprehensive " report they use very strange language to discribe " wtf is a front cam panel " I thought it was the front fender?
and my exhaust was tooo loud? my exhuast is quiet compared to those riced up lancer with cannons.

Well and it wasnt cheap, cost the buyer $249!!! such a rip off!!

well that my two cents about it

SCOOTER 25-01-2007 12:50 PM

The idea of the inspection is so that you don't get ripped off by buying a lemon. If you know about cars you can do it yourself. Check body panels for repairs, check brakes, check for oil leakage/usage etc. Some people have no idea, like my mate who bought a Sylvia and had to get the head done not long after. Luckily I did the work for him otherwise it would have cost him about $2k. I'll admit that if you are buying a 'fully' moded car then a performance workshop would be a better option, but for a stock car you can't go far wrong with the RAC.

P.S. I do work for the RAC, but have always trusted them as they are the bigest motoring organisaion in WA.

It's up to you who checks your car though...............

Not me (I know better ) but yes young apprentice from work had rac check over his rodeo before he bought it gave him the thumbs up even told him that it was a good buy. The NEXT day he brought it to work and asked me to have a look as it seemed to run rough on idle. I gave it a quick look over and to my suprise the engine oil was a little milky ( blown head gasket ) the auto trans fliud didnt even register on the dipstick had to add 1.5 litres and the box doesn't leak it was just low and the radiator had a leak from the top tank.
But I do relize that the RAC is a state wide organization with many employees and that some will do a better job than others so if i have offended then i apologise :D

Did you know that the inspections carry warranty. If they miss something they are meant to fix it or something. (Not sure exactly how it works)

P.S. you didn't offend. I just stick up for my company :)
