Default My wagon

Hi,

My name is Andrew and I'm an IT guy.
This is abit of a summary of my car.

Car
1990 Legacy GT Wagon, Gen1, Series1, Automatic.

When I got it the car was more or less standard. ~145,000kms. The original struts and springs were completely worn out, it was coughing and spluttering under load really badly due to the original coils. Otherwise it drove fairly well. I paid $3800 back in August 2009.
Only mods included;
- WRX bonnet scoop hacked into the bonnet in place of the original. Not even the right colour :/
- Side trims painted silver
- Top side trims had paint stripped off to reveal chrome finish underneath
- Very loud exhaust, just a big long pipe with a very cheap cannon "muffler" at the end.
- Very nice 17" GTB mags

Just coming up to 1 year and about 35,000kms later this is the feature list now;

Under bonnet
- Still standard and original EJ20G
- Bosche HEC-716 coil conversion
- Upgraded radiator header tank to a WRX metal one

ECU
- PowerFC PRO with hand controller. Running on default tune for the standard motor.

Suspension/handling
- Tein HA coilovers
- Ultrex rear strut brace
- Ultrex heavy duty front strut brace
- Ultrex H brace

Brakes
- Front slotted rotors
- Front 4pot calipers from a WRX
- Rear 2pot caliper conversion including hubs, backing plates, larger rotors etc (not the dogbone adaptors on original hubs)

Wheels
- Bloody aweful (in my opinion) aftermarket 17" wheels, spray painted gold with a $2 can of paint. I was forced to grab these at short notice - didn't realise the GTB mags didn't clear the 4pots until it was too late!

Exhaust
- Deleted the cheap cannon muffler and replaced with a much nicer muffler which actually quietens the car down quite a bit.

Driveline
- Converted to 5speed manual using a low kms (50,000) box from a 2002 WRX. 4.444 ratio. (Balistic's one he had forsale a recently).
- New Autoclutch clutch
- Rear diff remains the original 4.444 VLSD

Other
- Added towbar (unfortunately had to remove the rear skirting off the bottom of the rear bumper cause the towbar tongue is too close to the bumper - have to rectify that at some stage).
- Added a spare single disc CD player and some speakers I had sitting around. The deck suits me okay because it has an AUX input, I just run the Iphone through it.

This is my daily driver which I use for work. Great for carting lots of IT gear around between clients' premises etc. I do quite a few kms week to week and it's been pretty reliable and great on fuel.
You can probably tell from some of the mods (brakes, handling) that I want to try my hand at some track work.

Haven't had a mechanic lay a single spanner on the car yet, I've done all the mods myself at home in the car's parking spot on one side of the double garage. The only other people who've worked on the car have been an exhaust place down the road from my work to put the replacement muffler on, and Tyre World to do a quick balance on the replacement wheels when I got them. It's been great getting to know the car back to front, I've only really worked in L series Subaru's before, this is my first Lib/Leg based car. No way I could have done most of it without this and some other forums!

Future plans;
- Replace engine with something later model and stronger. Undecided yet, possible EJ20R. Wouldn't mind making up an EJ207 based motor but I can't afford it at this stage.
- Go to a VF34 turbo - already have this waiting to go in.
- Go to 440cc injectors - already have them waiting to go in.
- Go to 3" dump pipe
- Replace "sporty" steering rack with a wrx 2.7 ttlock rack - already have this waiting to go in.
- Replace fuel pump with the usual Walbro pump - already have this waiting to go in.
- Put in a FMIC kit - already have one of the last kits specially made to fit RS waiting to go in.
- Put a 2way plated LSD diff centre in the rear - already has this waiting to go in.
I'm basically ready to put all these things in now. Originally I was planning to bolt them all onto the existing stock motor to see how long it lasts but lately I've been thinking, why not do it properly and put in a decent motor at the same time. So I'm holding off for now to see if any nice motors come up forsale.

Oh yeah I also found an original RS scoop which I'm going to put back on again shortly (thank god).

This is is roughly how she looks at the moment - I think the coilovers might have gone in after this was taken but I didn't change the ride height much anyway.

I nearly got a leggy wagon as my first car, but settled on a 300zx tt instead. I bummed that I never owned one, though I've owned a gen4 liberty gt wagon. Every once and a while I look on carsales and still am tempted!

Nice one mate, car looks real nice.

Looking forward to what you get on a dyno once you have finished your engine change and mods.

Yeah I chucked the PFC in soon as I got home. Seems to run the car fine on the tune that's on it, although I did have to adjust the idle up a little. I haven't done the factory reset on it yet.
Thanks for the comments on how the car looks, but the looks of the car are pretty much my absolute lowest priority. I'm strictly anti-bling, it's all about the go-go for me
