Hello Perth!

Until someone at wrx.com.au mentioned this website I didn't know you existed! Great to find a local site with posts and links that I can relate to.

Bought my WRX in April from City Subaru (but I won't mention it if you don't) and do mostly the daily commute with school drop-off and pick-up. Haven't gone on a long drive yet but planning to go down south soon. Consequently getting 10.2L/100km according to the onboard computer.

Not too impressed with the standard car stereo and would dearly love to upgrade it but am wary of losing control from the steering wheel buttons. Any suggestions welcome.

Is it really necessary to use BP Ultimate 98RON or is 95RON just fine?

hello and welcome, lots of info on this site just remember to use the search button + don't sms talk and you won't get anal...

for the price of the two, id rather use 98 anyway its not that much price difference... not sure but i think if you read the car manual it will tell you 95 is fine, but i think thats what it said for the older rexys

nice collection of cars by the way

Welcome!

Hopefully you enjoy your WRX... with the stereo, if you're after better sound then you could swap out the speakers for better units. If it's the head unit you don't like then I have no idea if the steering wheel buttons work.

Fuel wise, if the car's manual says use 98RON then use it. If it doesn't then you can probably get away with 95, but 98 is just so much better than 95. Both the family cars I've grown up with plus my car like 98 better than 95. Runs smoother, does more k's...

Sadly, it's not a current collection!

Yes the manual suggests 95RON. I find 98RON so hard to find and am mostlylimited to Caltex/Woolworths (so I can use my rewards points ;)). I have found that my fuel economy varies with the petrol station I frequent which is a concern.

It's the head unit. It annoys me when I am skipping mp3 tracks to find it cycling back to the start of the current folder instead of moving on to the next folder. If I don't cycle and let it play it will play through. The display only shows 12 characters of the mp3 track title which after the track number and spacing means only 7 or 8 characters are shown - very frustrating.

I use 98 ultimate all the time. Costs a bit more, gives you a bit more power. I guess it averages out.

Soksta 27-10-2010 08:48 PM

Welcome!

Is it the stock head unit that your are having problems with?
Might be an idea to speak to City Subaru and see if they can have a look at fixing/replacing it.

Could it also be an issue with the format of the music your listening to?
I've had several mp3 files either pause, skip or refuse to play, which was replicated in another car stereo, turns out the issue was the encoding on the music.

You can upgrade your headunit and get a module that allows your to carry the steering wheel controls across.
If you have time free during the week I would suggest speaking to Macey @ Westside Car Audio in Cannington as he will be able to point you in the right direction.

I would prefer to not see my salesman ever again - waste of human dna. The problems I have are all to do with the (lack of) functionality. I will head over to Westside when I'm next over there - hell I may go over there this weekend. It's on Albany Hwy right?

Wow it makes that $999 for an Alpine unit look cheap.

The Subaru satnav comes with it's own life support machine for when you're given the price.

Congrats on the car, enjoy the forums and as Dave said 98RON is a must, better for you (and the car) in the long term. :D

Certain areas of the forums are set to not count posts.
Anti post whoring feature :D

Dr_Rock 27-10-2010 09:59 PM

I have two cars with the Kenwood AVN unit. It is not all that good. Sure it keeps the steering wheel controls, but there are better units out there I believe.
From one noob to another, feel free to come around and check out it's functionality, it might be worth $4500 to you. Just send me a PM.

Saint_23 27-10-2010 10:49 PM

Contact Macey (bumpstop on the forum) at Westside Cannington for stereo options.

Always use 98RON

and Welcome ! :)

Chum 27-10-2010 11:21 PM

Hey pal,

I recently put some focal splits, tweets, alpine headunit and a big focal sub about to go in all acquired from westide. I do recommend them (also mention pwrx for a discount) although if you can install yourself (i did the headunit, amp, sub, wiring myself with a friend) youll save heaps more money. But seriously if you replace anything get focal tweets/splits and youll triple the quality instantly (if not more).

Pics!

OK, you lost me when you said focal tweets.

Chum 28-10-2010 12:00 AM
OK, you lost me when you said focal tweets.
If thats not sarcasm I'll explain it to you. Splits are the 2 medium size speakers located at the bottom of your doors, the tweeters are the 2 small ones located near the middle or top of the doors (mine's next to my door handles). Focal is an audio brand that is considered to be the best in the market, I wouldn't recommend anything else really.

Hope that helps

Discobay 28-10-2010 12:07 AM

So the splits handle the bass?

Chum 28-10-2010 12:19 AM

They handle most of the frequencies of the bass and treble, although the subwoofer should handle most of the bass if setup correctly and you get the real doof doof going. Tweeters handle the higher frequency range and give it that real extra clarity.

Thats the basics, I'm no expert though :P

Jimmy S 28-10-2010 12:21 AM

No... Splits are a "split-speaker" meaning 2 parts per side... consists of a mid range(medium frequency audio) woofer(usually 5"-6" and mounted lower in the door) and a high range(high frequency audio) tweeter(usually the size of a ping pong ball and mounted at the door handle or higher)...

Bass is mostly non-existant in standard Subaru stereo systems, but can be added fairly easily with a subwoofer/amplifier combo!

This is all completely irrelevant though as it sounds like your issue is with the head unit functionality... which means, as has been suggested, go in and see your choice of audio experts(personally, I'd recommend Macey) and speak to them about a solution...

Oh, and welcome!

Chum 28-10-2010 12:33 AM

My bad you're right, I meant it although I explained it incorrectly although the gist was the same. I meant to say the splits include the tweeter and the speaker with the lower to mid range bass/treble. :) And yes I did go a bit too far with what he was after but at least now he understands a bit more and may consider getting something better in the future. Already had a few enquiries from other people about my setup due to the post lol.
