Hi, new to forum

Hi everyone,

I've been on here for a couple months and thought I'd introduce myself and my new ride. About a month ago I was looking up carsales and spotted a mint version 6 sti from Victoria that was being sold by a car collector, with just over 17000kms (you read that right). As I've always loved the original gc8 imprezas, I immediately bought a plane ticket and long story short I bought this beautiful example:

The above was the original carsales picture, and the one before was one I took today. It is #314 (hence my license plate)

It also has a set of really nice 18" BBS rims which complement the colour of the car nicely.

Before the sti I had a MY09 golf R32 which was a really nice car that I sold just a couple weeks ago:

I only (famous last words) lightly want to mod the car as it's completely STOCK, with a tune and an exhaust only at this stage (from what I searched on this forum it seems I need to buy an aftermarket ecu). Any advice on safe mods will be appreciated. I did call MMS and the guy said that even with a tune and exhaust the transmission will not be able to handle the power, and I will end up needing to rebuild the engine and a new transmission which doesn't seem correct to me. I may have to call ASG for a second opinion. So I will ask you guys firstly will the stock engine and gearbox handle a tune and exhaust reliably? Will I need to upgrade the fuel pump? I am not planning on modding the car too much, just a few bang for your buck mods to give it a bit more bite. I am not planning on tracking the car at all, mostly interested in a bit more straight line acceleration. What would you guys recommend?

Happy to be a part of this forum and meeting some of you guys at meets and cruises...

Sam

Pretty impressive pick up. Welcome!

TROLLEY 12-10-2013 01:40 PM

Wow beautiful!

Avalanche 14-10-2013 02:44 PM

Transmission will be fine for a tune and exhaust

drewgong 14-10-2013 03:39 PM

It's a very low ks example of original gear.. they prob want to take your good bits off ya hence engine gearbox replacement. Is ask around too.

MY00GC8 14-10-2013 03:49 PM

tune and exhaust will be fine,
definitely do a fuel pump at the same time

Kimba 14-10-2013 04:01 PM

G'day Sam! Sensible performance mods aside, keep her body pure and don't bolt any silly bits and pieces onto such a rare, immaculate example. GC8 ftw ;)

Sammy82 14-10-2013 11:43 PM

Thanks for the replies guys, feeling the love. I love the car to bits, won't be doing any exterior mods at all (looks perfect as it is). As for internal mods- tune & exhaust only at this stage...

RJ999 15-10-2013 12:18 AM

Welcome aboard!

Exhaust and tune will be fine...like Drewgong said they probably need a few original GC8 parts which are hard to find LOL...take good care of this rare find

drewgong 15-10-2013 09:41 AM

im sorry, but this really makes me lol inside... sti gearbox n engine wont handle exhaust n tune.. lol GIVE THEM TOOO US! keep an eye on ya flywheel buddy!

REXXXED 15-10-2013 10:05 AM

Talk about tin foil hat on. Sheesh peeps!

Exhaust, fuel pump, tune

Possibly need a new clutch depending on the condition of yours. Seems like it hadn't been driven much though (depending how hard it was driven for those 17,000 kms ;) ) so you will be fine!

My 5 speed is still going strong after 147,000 kms. And it has all the above plus more for the last 2 years.

astralex 15-10-2013 12:00 PM

I concur with Rexxed. I'm pushing 300hp on a GD 5 speed with no drama, so I'm not sure how a tune and exhaust will turn yours into a change purse.

drewgong 15-10-2013 12:11 PM

17000k's new tranny and rebuild.. TOP ADVICE!

thehowlfactor 15-10-2013 12:15 PM

Was the fact that only 17 000 kms that are on it mentioned when the tune and exhaust were discussed? Considering it normally would have at least 10 times that could that of made a difference in the advice given?

REXXXED 15-10-2013 12:21 PM

Do you remember who you spoke to at MMS? Seem's the information you were provided would have had more depth than "it will need a re-build"...

Yes the Version 6 is a EJ207, however it is semi-open deck, so not as strong as the later 207's. No reason however that it couldn't handle ~250hp however at 20 or so PSI..

Same with the gearbox. It is only a 5 speed, which to some people they think they are made of glass..... plenty of people run ~300hp with no issues.

My guess is it was more of a pre-emtive warning. You start modding your 13 year old car and things may break..... I had the same warnings when I modded mine. Do your research, do it once, do it well (and always know in the back of your head that something could pop when you start modding cars).

RJ999 15-10-2013 12:23 PM

Gearbox swap and full engine rebuild with exhaust/tune... lol ...
Assuming either -you didn't mention kms... or somebody needs parts ...or just being warned what could be needed.

drewgong 15-10-2013 12:32 PM

i honestly wish mine would break so i had an excuse to upgrade stuff!

WhiteRX 15-10-2013 12:33 PM

Awesome find dude, if you don't mind me asking what did the car set you back ?

REXXXED 15-10-2013 12:35 PM

ps: you people are on crack....someone needs parts......
What because a 5 speed gearbox and an EJ207 are so hard to come by??

And to the OP car was definitely an awesome find, possibly my favourite colour/shape combo out of all the STI's!

Spektre 15-10-2013 12:53 PM

i agree, seriously...

OP, great car. be good to see her getting driven!

mitchwnz 15-10-2013 01:33 PM

Hi Sam,

Awesome pick up mate, love the car and can't believe the low km's. Quality car deserves a quality exhaust.. go see Norm Butler and get him to quote up the job for you, then talk to ASG regarding a tune. Good luck.

Sammy82 15-10-2013 07:05 PM

Thanks guys, I don't remember who I spoke to at MMS but I believe it was someone who knows what they're talking about cos the guy who picked up the phone said to me that he'll get the guy who knows all about the older sti's to call you back. Yes the guy knew it had done 17000kms...it seemed crazy to me. He said "hand on heart, if you get a tune and an exhaust next week we'll be getting you a new 6 speed transmission"...

Anyway he basically said just leave it as it is or it will break, but I reckon a tune and an exhaust is a must for this car. What do u mean by watching the flywheel?

It was such a rare find, I was about to pull the trigger on a C63 with a performance pack but saw this- shows you how much I love the old sti's...

JDM_STYLE 15-10-2013 07:25 PM

I heart MMS but what's with telling people not to tune and if they do they'll need a new 6spd... Not like everyone does limiter launches and there's plenty of 5spds with a tune (more power) out there and are still alive!!!

What have you been smoking bro?

C63 alllllllll day!

VUSSUTE 19-12-2013 12:48 AM

I think people think the GC8s are more fragile than they actually are. I have 147500kms on mine and its driven hard EVERY DAY. My box is fine, my engine is fine and i have done plenty of 6000rpm launches.
I think its more about proper regular servicing and having "some kind" of mechanical sympathy. But I have had NO!!!! issues what so ever.

Just in case I have googled second hand gearboxs and motors and have found plenty. So i dont think parts for them are rare (yet)

Quoted for when you strip second gear and/or spin a big end bearing :p

mARC 19-12-2013 02:19 AM

Seriously lol'd at they want your parts.

When you look at their capabilities and what they have in their workshop the parts wouldn't even rate a mention.

My MY99 wrx is running a 3 inch turbo back exhaust, bigger fuel pump along with vf28 STi turbo. Stock ECU. She runs schweet!!! Personally, I think no tuning is required other than make sure you have decent spark plugs and leads. Your stock STi ecu should be able to self learn the changes with just an exhaust.

RJ999 19-12-2013 11:38 AM

So yours is running like that with no tune?

Or you didn't see a difference after you had it tuned?

Or you can't tell the difference as you've never had yours tuned?

Definitely tune that ecu after the mods...big difference imho!

Not required on GC's, ECUs self learn and can handle intakes, coolers, exhaust etc without tunes...

Darken, consider a v5/6 STi ecu swap they came factory with a vf28

RJ999 19-12-2013 12:55 PM

wow nice...only later years ecu then that can't handle the mods

But you cant tune a GC8 ECU like you can a GD. They have to buy an aftermarket ecu if they want to custom tune.

s20525xxx 19-12-2013 02:02 PM

Gd&gr ecu can also handle the basic mods with evu self learning. But has anyone tested boost spiking, fuel consumption, misfiring etc with stock map and those mods?

Yeah Davidsdh, he's got a tbe and few other little things. Occasionally boost spikes and cels. Fuel milage is on par with my tuned Sti.

s20525xxx 19-12-2013 04:16 PM

How much spike does it make? No misfiring at high rpm? Cheers.

Cool.

Has anyone tried shorten boost controller/solinoid's vacumn hose(increase sensitivity) to reduce spiking?

Hi guys just an update on my car. Last week I had the following mods installed by ASG:
3" Hitech TBE
Process West CAI
Powerfc ecu and tune
Walbro 255lh fuel pump

I'm pretty happy with the way the car drives now. The power increase is quite noticeable and the sound of the CAI is to die for. The Hitech exhaust sounds perfect and I have the classic boxer rumble I was after. The following is my dyno chart:
