Hi all

Hi Guys,
New to the forum and to perth as well.

Thought I'd sign up as I'm on the hunt for a WRX.

Any pointers on a good one for sale would be great but haven't made up my mind on a STI or WRX.

Have my eye on a nice 05 STI MY05. Have haven't had any thought about putting it on the track to get its full potential so is it was waste of money and instead go for a newer WRX?

Hoping to pick one up in the next 1-3 weeks

thanks

TROLLEY 23-07-2014 11:01 PM

I assume you're talking about the smurf blue 05 for 52k? The owner is on here and so is his build thread. Good price considering the amount of money that has been poured into it. You would have to weigh up how often you would get to drive it, whether you can afford to break shit/keep it running, etc.

If I had stupid amounts of disposable income and could afford a weekend toy, I would buy it.

StewyD32 23-07-2014 11:38 PM

Hey trolley. Wish I had that amount of money in my pocket.
It seems to but in great shape and not heavily modded
The gears are a bit notchy but it goes in alright so could be just the short STI synchros that I'm not used to. Test drove a wrx with an upgraded turbo and felt a lot smoother than the STI.

Buying any sports car and not putting it on the track is wasting it's potential.

StewyD32 24-07-2014 12:40 PM

True but hard to resist.
I more than likely would start doing track days but haven't before.

DukeDrifter 24-07-2014 12:48 PM

If I was you I'd buy the black 05 on carsales at the minute. He's asking a bit much but it comes with some nice fruit.

Rexxar 24-07-2014 02:22 PM

Welcome mate I would sus out the one above ^^^

Man they are so cheap now.. I bought mine nearly $45k back in 2006

DukeDrifter 24-07-2014 02:24 PM

Fek me :( that's a lot of coin. That black one was for sale on here for 25kono and now it's just shy of 28k with e85 being the only real difference.

StewyD32 24-07-2014 06:35 PM

Yeah seen that one output it at the back of my mind.
The one I have my mind on is cheaper with less mileage and full history with Osborne park. Also not as modded which us what I want.
Im going on the hunt all day Friday and Saturday see what turns up. Was half thinking on investing in the MY11 wide arch wrx if there's a cheap one floating around. Great shape to them.

DukeDrifter 24-07-2014 06:45 PM

Subaru osborne park big whoop, the black one is in good condition and for a 10 year old car 100,000 odd kms really isnt alot. Semi-slicks, ecu, turbo, exhaust and e85 are pretty basic mods. Those mods alone will save you upwards of 10k. It's been tuned and serviced by more reputable shops then Subaru Osborne Park

Cheap is not always best and as i said in your other thread buy an sti, they have a stronger motor, gearbox, diffs and better brakes

s20525xxx 24-07-2014 07:51 PM

Dealer service will actually turn me off im looking for a used sti. lots of stuff they use on sti r same as normal impreza...... decent if the car is stock.

StewyD32 26-07-2014 02:24 PM

Ok, test drove as many cars as I could yesterday and today and decided on an STI. However the aggression on the older (MY05) is so good compared to the newer models (MY08). Is this due to the torque being curved on the newer models or did I just drive sh*tboxes?.

Will be getting pre inspects and compression tests done before purchase.
Hopefully will have one by the end of the week.
If anyone knows of any good ones to view let us know or advice

DukeDrifter 26-07-2014 04:39 PM

6 speed has a shorter gears ie you'll grab 3rd before a 100 where as I think you can just hit a 100 in a 5 speed.

The 2.0L also revs more freely then the 2.5 and has forged internals from factory.

My05/05 Sti is what you want.

Thanks for the link fable,
But out of my price range.

StephenR 27-07-2014 10:15 PM

Just a heads up dont waste money on a compression test it will not tell you nothing about the stateof an engine.

A cylinder leak down test will give an accurate picture of the engines condition.

magic1 28-07-2014 06:06 AM

Are you sure?

StewyD32 28-07-2014 10:09 AM

Really. Thought the compression test was good enough. What does the leak down pick up that the compression test doesn't.
Don't know much about this so could be a stupid question.

s20525xxx 28-07-2014 11:39 AM

I thought comp test tells u which piston is broken if one cylinder pressure is significantly lower than others. If two adjecent cylinders are low, MAYBE head gasket leak.

Leak down test tells exactly where is the leak. But if all cyljnders are worn, it would be less effective?

Went and got a new purchase on condition of one or two things

DukeDrifter 28-07-2014 06:06 PM

Not bad at all, id haggle after getting it inspected

StewyD32 28-07-2014 06:23 PM

What would be a ball park figure to be getting it for seems we have to factor in its a dealership sale.

Its actually the first one I seen and no other ones compared to it. Have been looking the last few weeks.

It has like brand new coils, full service history and 95k on the clock on it and is in great condition as far as I can see.

One of the conditions is a good pre inspection with a compression test etc.
Will be taking out a 3 year warranty with it as well just in case and peace of mind.

Would I bother with the pre inspection seems i have the standard warranty from them and will be taking out the extended one as well

Rossco 28-07-2014 07:35 PM

3 year warranty not worth the paper it's written on.....

StewyD32 28-07-2014 08:09 PM
3 year warranty not worth the paper it's written on.....
Really, How so?

thehowlfactor 28-07-2014 08:55 PM

Basically they will try to get out of repairing under warranty by any means necessary. Its written in such a way that they have an out for the majority of problems. Its a lot of money that you can spend on other things.

StewyD32 28-07-2014 09:18 PM

Yeah. I see where your coming from, suppose you can say the same about any motor related company like insurance etc.

Will have to look I to it and see what the story it with it.

This car was for sale on here a few years back
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/sale-cars-only/50900-05-sti-32k.html

Insome 29-07-2014 11:03 AM

If you're looking around the 25k odd mark Westside Auto Wholesale have a 2011 premium wrx hatch for $26977. Have a good look around before you buy, there's always deals to be had.

StewyD32 29-07-2014 12:22 PM

Test drove the one your talking about and wasn't too impressed with it. The alloys will need a full referb as there are some big chunks taken Out of them.
Not to mention the high mileage for the year. I know the price reflects the mileage.
They did a good detail on the car as well but red dust was all over it when digging around it especially in the boot.

Thanks for the find. Had good search on here and couldn't find this. Not many Kms since then. Ties in with the dealers story about the previous owner only driving it every few weekends.

Startodo 29-07-2014 02:50 PM

No worries. I was looking for the misses but she is set on getting a foz, and as much as I would like to buy for me and give her my car, I've put too much effort into my foz for her to run it into the ground.. I swear no mechanical sympathy

StewyD32 29-07-2014 07:05 PM

Looks the exact same minus the spoiler.

StewyD32 29-07-2014 09:42 PM

Hi guys,
Just to go back on a previous question about the extended warranty.
I searched the site and seems that everyone is dead set against them. Is there any point/advantage of me getting one other than holding a piece of paper in my hand.

Also is a compression test alone on the engine good enough as a pre purchase inspection on it?
Need to start getting things organised. Getting itchy to get it in the driveway now.

Thanks

s20525xxx 29-07-2014 10:13 PM

My friend had a 08 sti, tuned to 320whp, thrashed it, cylinder three failed. Put it back stock, and had a rebuild done at dealer. The engine does not feel right, suspecting cylinder wasn't bored at all.

Dealer aometime does do warranty rebuild, but how well they can do is the next matter.

After StephonR's pm, I think leak down test will give u more accurate result, but compression test is much easier to do still.

Never rush, take u time, even ask the owner to drive the car to c how well he treats the car.

StewyD32 29-07-2014 10:25 PM

It's at a dealers so have no contact with the previous owner.
Took it for 2 test drives and the second test drive a good 40 minutes putting it through its spaces in an industrial area with the dealer. Feels great but I'm not as mechanically minded as a lot of you guys. So want piece of mind really. Given the type of car and past if could of had.

s20525xxx 29-07-2014 10:50 PM

Just a though, borrow a obd reader, check how many km has it done since the last check engine light(if any) was clear. If its recent, there might be sth wrong.

StewyD32 31-07-2014 06:09 PM

SO got the car inspected and a compression test done and everything is perfect, except two tiny things which aren't even problems.

1. No high beam brake light. Was on the spoiler and when it was removed one wasn't installed on the back window..... the dealer is going to do that.

2. Slight wear on the front tyres against the plastic wheel arch..... just have to adjust the new coilovers to stop it, and also wear on the inside of the tyres. However a new set of coils were put in and alignment etc before traded in so the guy said it was fine and would have solved that.

So in all in great shape. They mechanic said he wouldn't have a problem buying it.
Compression was 130-131 for all cylinders. Still have to get the report as the dealer picked up the car.
Will have to take the hit on the timing belt in a few thousand km as there is no info of it being done. The car hasn't hit the 100k mark to more than likely wasn't done before being traded in even if it is close to the 100k mark.
