My understanding was that the independants who have 'joined hands' with the ALP in order to form the current majority government, were not, prior to the election, already in bed with them?

Would that not mean, that voters for these independants were not informed that they were actually indirectly voting for the ALP?

correct, the independants did not indicate their intentions until they were in a collaborative position of power to do so.

Bingo. After the election both Labor and the Liberals were trying to sweeten up the Independants to join them to form a majority government.

Gillard got more independants to join her, so she could form a majority government. The electorate did not vote for her or know which way the independants would go. So in my opinion, Australia did not vote for Gillard to be PM.

Also, had things gone the other way, Australia would not have voted for Abbot to be in power.

There should have been another election right then imo.

What happens from here if he stands down?

Pretty much the same thing that happened after the election with both sides trying to get the backing of Greens and independents?? If Labor can't secure the numbers we head to an election??
