Id say keep the FTO for say the first 6 months on your P's but go out get some alone road experience and do some events like Motorkhana/skid pan days/tuning days. Get use to a car moving around on the edge before you jump into something quicker.

Motorkhanas are great value and you learn low speed car control and putting the car in "garages" and around bollards and you can do them now seeing your over 16!! I Usually rock up to them and so does Alex. Next one is on the 28th? i think.

When I was getting my l/p's I had competed on both gravel (autocross) and tarmac (motorkhana) in a 1.5l carby lancer before I got the RS. Not long after i had done 2 skid pan days in the first 2 weeks of owning the RS haha.

Sadly i have to get rid of the FTO its got a few *cough* alot *cough* of problems and the parts are astronomically priced

But with the motokhana thing even though im on my l's can i compete

I cant imagine wrapping your car round a pole would be :/
But atleast the lamp posts in Wa are designed to bend when you hit them
not like in the uk where they are concrete and you and up having a lamp post sat next to you

I would also probably recommend sticking with something less powerful for a first car, you're going to get some damage whether it be by yourself or others. That's a given. Another thing, if money is an issue is insurance. Maybe your parents can help you out by putting it under their policy or something but that's just something to think of before looking around at higher end performance.

To be honest, I've never actually done a skid pan day or anything like that, probably could learn a thing or two and I hear they are highly recommended so I would suggest checking them out.

I had a '97 Mitsubishi Magna as my first car. Was lowered to all hell, 18" rims, chipped, exhaust. I thought I was the shit. Looking back now it was pretty funny. But I did as I (and others) have suggested and waited it out before moving into a 5.7L V8, that was fun and many fonds memories were had.

As the other guys have said look into track days and events, not too sure about the age limit/what level of licensing you need to be on but I would presume the minimum would be your P's.

I might have to go and find out about all them events and hopefully its the same as motorkhana (i did a quick search) and you just have to have a supervisor with you..

I dont get why people do that ( no offence) but they get a car which isnt all that amazing and mod the hell out of it, i guess its just a phase really..

Haha no offence taken, it was actually purchased like that, I didn't mind it except for scraping up every kerb/speed hump. It even had a few victories against some skylines etc.

Umm went from the magna to a VYsII SS then to an R34 GT-T now to a WRX, plenty out there it's all about taste.

That's a good thing then I suppose. They just won't appreciate you beast as much as some would :P

It was so much worse in the uk people would buy corsa's (barina's) and renault clio's and peugot 206's and out huge exhausts and body kits on them.

Thats quite a nice selection of cars you've gone through....

To the OP, in all honesty I had more fun driving my unmodded shitbox round the UK streets than I do driving my modded WRX now...why? Because I am not physically as capabale as the car is. High speed cornering, late braking and harsh mid-corner acceleration is scarily easy and when you are a new driver you absolutely need a car that will tell you when you are doing something wrong.
