NBN plan
Hi all,
With the Liberals getting elected last weekend, the existing plan for the NBN (fibre-to-home) will soon be scrapped in favour of the cheaper (albeit crappier) fibre-to-node network. An online petition has been started to submit to the new government, to keep the fibre-to-home network. This petition has now grown to be the largest online petition in Australia's history, with a new person signing every 3.5 seconds. Have found these articles are the most relevant as support arguments to the existing FTTH rollout.
Why not FTTN? | NBN MYTHS http://theconversation.com/can-australia-afford-the-coalitions-nbn-17494 https://theconversation.com/labor-and-coalition-broadband-policies-whats-the-difference-16165 |
We should just take a seat & wait to see what the new plans are. He has said FTTH is the plan but there are a number of DSL technologies being developed to match the speed of fibre over the last few hundred meters. Alot of misleading information going around.
Honestly think they will crumble & end up doing FTTP. |
Just because Labors plan is better than the Libs, doesn't mean that Labors is any good.
IMO it should be done properly: Sony Launches Ultra-Fast Fiber Internet In Japan - Technology News - redOrbit |
Sad truth is it's all obsolete once it's installed. Something is better than nothing.

My view is that the FTTN plan will be cheaper in short term (next 5-10 years), but more expensive in the long term (over 10 years).
Why spend billions to still use an obsolete network of copper wire? |
Massive cost overrun, only 2% rolled out in 5 years. The problem is that in its current design the NBN is the largest single civil construction project ever attempted in this country by a long ways. It was not costed or planned properly and no business plan produced prior to launching into it. Short term? 5-10 years?
Fuck me, they haven't even started building it in Safety Bay so we're AT LEAST 13 years away! Can't even get ADSL2 due to multiplexing at the nodes. |

the "not costed" bit can be applied to the coalition's plan as well:rolleyes:. Looking at it the other way, the Coalition wants to implement a plan that will cost at least 2/3 of the original plan (I am just using the numbers they put forth) with at most 1/10th of the speed (assuming you live on top of a node), cost more to maintain, unreliable when it rains, incompatible with future upgardes and guaranteed to be obsolete in ten years. |
I would settle for better mobile coverage as the current level is appauling
