I think new tyres and then a possible change in pad material may help, not sure if you mentioned what pad you are using ? a pad with high initial bite and old rcomps would not be helping the cause.
I drove a EVO 3 RS without ABS and it did take some getting used to, fine line between stopping in the gate and fifty cent tyres.
