Not all the field through + first 2 stages are "warmup" with the base time easily achieved by most cars in the field...
Stage 3 onwards is where it starts to get real...

Targa Tas runs on a base time system. Eg each stage is given a base time. If you go under that time there is no penalty (or time added) but if you go over then you are given a time.

Example, If teh stage has a base time of 2 min 30 secs and you do it in 2:22 you have a time of 0:00.

But if you run a time of 2:32 your time will be 0:02.

At the beginning of the event the base times are easier. Thejy get more difficult as the event progresses.

Part of the challenge for the top teams in the early stages is not going quick, but going just quick enough to net get any penalties but save the car and tyres etc.

That's rallying!

Dean 4th at the end of Day 1 with Graham Iddles and Brendon Winterbourn having a tight battle at 20 & 21 respectively in Modern...
Interestingly the leading Mitsubishi is in P13...

Good day today, easy stuff in the morning and good weather.

Had good stages for most of the afternoon with the last 2 being wet.

Early days but reasonably happy for leg 1.

Tomorrow will be a fun day with the entire leg being run backwards from previous years so no one will have a perceived advantage by knowing the course.

As far as the Lamborghini goes well the "Car" is miles ahead of anything else and in most competitors eyes is the definition of cheque book racing. Nothing against the whites they are genuinely good guys, but the car is way faster in every aspect compared to anything else.
