Default Many Problems

G'day all, the car is 92 RS Liberty.

Well, installed my TDO5H and VOS(chip) on friday/saturday. Went in no worries apart from some boost spikes due to ECU issues(we think). The RS was going hard on saturday and all of sunday with no worries.

Went to drive to work this morning and she had no power, few psi of boost and overheated aswell.

Topped up with required amount of coolant, and got to work. No visible coolant leaks either.

Now Jumped in the car for the trip home, expecting not to make it. Got about 5km down the road and she started to overheat again. Got some help form dtrally and got a bit of an airlock out. Got me home the other 25km's with the temp gauge going up and down.

So the problems are overheating and only a maybe 2psi of boost. Cant be good. Turbo is huffing plenty of air, so not a seized turbs.

Im after ANY clues as to what my problem here is? If anyone has the slightest idea let me know please.

Thanks all, Mitch.

wow that sound a little screwy.

if the water temps keep fluctuating but the overheating has been resolved from the air lock then it sound like you thermostat is gone. - easy fix. Thermostat is located just under the passenger side head at the front of the block where the coolant hose goes in. replace it and see how you go.

if its using coolant but you have no leaks, you may have a blown head gasket. check you r oil for contamination. - Big problems

dont know whats up with having only 2psi. The only reason that could be is if you have an exhaust leak or your wastegate is jammed open.

Water pump on the way out? .. Thermostat opening? .. Thermo fans kicking on when they should?

thermostat was replaced 6 months ago, but doesnt explain boost probs.

richX - drivers side thermo is out at the moment but cant cause that much of a problem. Other one works A OK. Wouldnt know what the waterpump is like.

EDIT - just checked oil, tis a bit low, but could not see any traces of coolant.

I had an issue on an old car the same as you're having now .. It's because the thermo fans were not kicking in.

Sitting in traffic, queing at Maccas drivethru = Overheating
Cruising arround = Cool

Worth checking out .. Let your car idle for 30 mins, see if they fire up.

But it is overheating? Getting into the red .. If that's the case, there is only so many things you have to check before you find the problem ..

Get a compression test ASAP. That will tell you once and for all if you head gasket or something major is not right.

If you compression test comes back alright then investigate the thermostat. And just because its six months old does not mean is i cant be at fault. I have had a three week old thermostat malfunction before in my Legacy.

And make sure both thermo fans are working. Also see if you can get a radiator and complete cooling system flush. You may have a small blockage somewhere.
