Default CEL and limp modes

Just thinking last night....
A mate cooked his Beemer in the weekend, I am surprised that cars do not go into limp mode when certain parameters get out of spec ie in this case water temp / oil temp.
You would wonder when companies develop such sophisticated ECUs they do not in corporate these features?
I would have thought some of these things could easily have been built in as std features, for nil cost.
So, what types of issues do the newer subbies go into limp mode for?
Can anyone answer this for me?
Al

Ummm i have been told by the plumber at work, his son is a subaru mechanic for 9 years now. ANd last year a MY06/07 went into their workshop after a country workshop couldnt figure out why it wouldnt accelerate over 40/km/h. Aparently the rear brake light was out and it wouldnt get the person go over 40 as it may cause an accident.

I know when it comes to heating, some manufacturers believe if you cant read a temp gauge its your fault if it blows, then you take it to them and pay them for repairs...

A brake light wont cause it to go into limp mode.

I may have been a short circuit somewhere that blew the brake lights or something and the short circuit caused it to go into limp mode

the ecu has a function called a advance multiplier. it goes from 1 to 16. 16 is healthy and allows full ignition advance and more power
1 is obviously shit

Ford do have a system where there is a cylinder head temp sensor, that senses the temp of the Metal and not the water, and progressivly shuts down the cylinders starting from the back forwards to try and help prevent the engine from cooking it'self. It is used in the later model falcons. I dont think that any other car has this feature, though i may be wrong.

An engine coolant temp gauge doesnt work too well when there is no coolant in the engine, eg when a water pipe snaped off and you loose all your coolant. Either way i wouldnt expect anything too great from a BMW, they are crap car (mechanically)

Yes he is pissed about his car.
Dealing with PLC programming and stuff I know how easy it would be for them to programm a lot of safety features in I just wonder for things like this why they don't take full advantage of it or do they? in Subies I am talking now
