Default Strenghtening gearbox

Is there anyway to strengthen a gearbox for more power or you have to replace it with a better one ?

Get a STI 6 speed. Will usually cost around the $7K mark to supply and install one. Which is slightly more expensive than a ppg stright cut gearset. But in the end it will be stronger than a PPG set and after you sell your old gearbox, provided it is in good condition, it may even work out cheaper.

prolly cheaper to purchase a newer or second hand gearbox which is strengthened from the factory as opposed to rebuilding your current one. Cost is in the labour

That depends on what you have now. Later model 5 speeds with 8 bellhousing bolts have a stronger casing (than early)to reduce flex, also if you change a standard 3.9 crownwheel and pinion for 4.11 or 4.44 (with compatible drop gears and rear diff) you mechanically reduce the load on the existing gears in the box, effectively increasing it's ability. Later boxes have a bigger key for 5th gear and can be retro fitted to early cases. PPG, Albins, Holinger, P.A.R. & Modena all make replacement gears in a variety of ratios and selection types. Good synthetic oil helps too.

Labour (only) to remove, rebuild and refit my 5 speed came to $704.50 That's a full house rebuild 1-5 Ivan Albins Helical gear set with new forks, 3 new synchro's and numerous other bits and pieces. My front diff spider gears were also fubared and this one of labour cost included replacing them as well.

It helps if your mechanic knows Suby gearboxes half as well as Tony Flood

Excuse my phone camera photo, up close they are a work of art.
No Police attracting, noisy square cut gears here
