Your transmission will crap itself. There is a kit I think for doing
what you want. It is not as simple as removing the front drive shafts.

I have never done it myself but I am sure someone will jump
in who has 1st hand experience.

The question I have is why ? the WRX is renowned for AWD so
why circumvent it ?

LSD C Spool 2wd Conversion 99-ON WRX
Spool for centre transfer case. 5 speed transmission 1999 to current. For non turbo models and other turbo models, consult MRT.Converts 4wd to 2wd rear only. Easy to fit, simply swap this part with the factory centre LSD.

$793 on mrtrally.com.au under transmissions!

You can buy the part from subaru or rigioli or you modify the standard diff but this is permanent. Mate did one on his wrx/brumby conversion which was a lot more fun in rwd than awd.

You'll want to upgrade the standard r160 diff to a r180 rear end with thicker shafts. r160 diffs aparently wont take long to break when a RWD conversion is done.

Why would you want a rwd wrx? The chassis is not designed to be RWD, nor the front suspension. I think a rwd wrx would be deadly anyway. but if you prefer drifting than sticking around fast corners then bah.
