Default Not a WRX.. but related.. I guess?

Ok,

So I am going down south tomorrow and since I don't own a well built Jap car anymore (subaru, mazda) and I own an unreliable Taxi (holden or ford) I thought I better pop the bonnet. So after 25 minutes of searching for the bonnet release (since I haven't had to open one in years) I find it

Then I am admiring some aussie/german/jap/khazikstani/everywhere else engineering and I find this doovahikkie hanging off, now I am sure it has a really technical name but for the minute I will stick with the above.

Is this bad if it is hanging off or is it just there for its looks? I have plugged it back in now, looked all gunked up with this white looking stuff, looked alot like shampoo, but I assume it is oil?
It is held on with the weakest spring clip I have ever seen.

Thanks people

yes, pcv breather. The white gunk is proberly oil mixed with water, from not driving much or not getting the engine hot enough. It is important that it is held on both for emission reasons and to ensure no dirt or dust gets into your engine

Its an oil vapour breather alright but not the crank case breather. Its just from the cam cover. There will be a second breather line hidden under the manifold more than likely for the crank case breather.

yeah just rocker cover breather as said above I have noticed a few have come off. Check your coolant level as the heater hoses like to leak on the xr6 turbos maybe even give them a bit of a tighten i always do at work. Also the power steering cooling lines under the car are known for leaking so may want to have a quick look under there too.
