Default Exhaust Install

Hey people...a mate and myself fitted my turbo back 3" yesterday...all sweet...

BUT...the original turbo/dump pipe heat shield does not fit over the new dump pipe....at the moment I have left this off...and have been told I can either cut the original to fit or just leave it off..

Is it ok to leave it off?? like its not gonna end up melting the above brake fluid ect bottles?

Advice is much appreciated

I alot of people leave it bare. But I suggest either making the heat shield fit or putting some heat wrap on it.

It will radiate heat onto the clutch line, brake fluid, wiring, speedo cable(if youve got one) and especially TMIC (if youve still got one).

Id suggest wrapping it just to minimise heat soak into the TMIC.

Yer, i had the same issue.

Not running with a Heat Shield at the moment. Don't really notice any performance difference with it off/on.

Obviously there for a reason so if you can put it back, do so .. I haven't got to doing that yet. Haven't had any issues.

Cool car btw, identicle to mine

What's next for you?

Hmm... I'm suprised at some of you.

The heat shield is there for a very big reason! If you go punting your car around (I mean doing it properly) the turbo will get very hot and could potentially melt the plastics in the surrounding area. Worst case scenario this will cause an engine fire.

The heat shield is there to stop the heat radiating in that direction (and keep the turbo warm - maybe also a good spot to fry an egg ). Put it back on straight away.

I always let everything cool down a little before coming to a stop. Don't really do any track work.

Keep in mind that the air splitter under the scoop also has a channel to direct air onto the Turbo.

If that is the logic you wish to apply... then so be it.

Do you hit boost ever in your car? Well then your turbo is working and generating a lot of heat. Whether or not you 'cool down' after driving means absolute bullshit, as your engine components could have melted whilst driving. As for the air splitter... yeah a little bit of air on a few hundred degree turbo will do didly squat.

Why not take the cover off the left head? Surely thats not needed either?

Haha mate, you've got an attitude.

Like i said, i'll put it back on when i get to it.

After it being off since i've had the TBE fitted, and giving the car a squirt every now and then, i haven't really noticed any difference to any of the components - Braking is still the same, my clutch still feels the same, and after going for a fang lastnight, the IC was cold when i got home.

Sitting in traffic, sure it probably gets hotter under there than it should, but in 6+ months of not having it, haven't noticed an issue.

I agree with what your saying though .. If you're 'racing' the car, or the Turbo is under continual abuse, it'd certainly be better to have it.

This just isn't the case for me - If you're that worried about it, I'll give you my address and you can come re-fit it if you like?! :P

Did you have any warning lights come up after swapping dump pipes or was it just and unbolt and bolt on job without worrying?
