Default Engine noise

Hi Guys,

I've got a new 07 WRX only done 4000kms completely stock and if i'm in first, second or 3rd gear, at about 3000-4000rpm and above, if i just lighty press the go pedal (from completely off throttle to just feathering it), i get a loud tappety noise coming from the engine. sounds like the valve train is being very noisy or something!

I took it to 2 subaru dealerships. One told me it will go away after a few thousand kms and one told me its perfectly normal and a characteristic of the boxer engine, and that the valve train makes a bit of noise under different engine load.

Does anyone else hear this noise when they do the same thing? I'm sure it's probably normal but it plays on my mind a bit. Even if someone with an 07 could try doing the same thing and let me know if they hear the noise i'd be very appreciative.

Cheers guys,

Chris

Does not sound normal to me. DEMAND someone inspect it properly. Any valve lashing or tappet noise in an engine with only 4000km is wrong. Cept if you drive a pushrod LS1 or XR6T

Nah its not turbo noise.

its like a rolling/vibrating noise, like the lifters doing their thing, except loudly.

Its fine during normal acceleration its just when i back off and then feather the throttle at higher revs.

That thought crossed my mind too. Maybe a bit of kookaburra noise from the wastegate or something?

I'm pretty sure its coming from the engine, and it sounds too "heavy" to be wategate noise.

Thanks though guys i appreciate your input!

Have you ever heard a cat with a really chunky sounding purr?

Its like that but louder and coming from the engine. Thats the best way i can explain it

Ill take it the right oils have been put in as its in its run-in period ey? Only thing i could really think of being a new car and all. It might just go away after a few thousand k's but i wouldnt take the chance of damaging the car for a further couple thousand k's.

Dont spose the idle is down at all or the engine shudders? Or just this little noise?

Personally I wouldn't be too worried, warranties are there for a reason and WRX's are a noisy little engine.

If you are concerned, take it to a workshop dealing in Subaru's (See the Workshop thread) i.e. Allstar, RMS, MMS, RT etc. Go for a drive with them and get them to explain the noise to you.

Or go test drive another one and see if it does it too.
