a conversion is fairly DIY with the right tools, although be prepared for at least $1k to do it.

also make it easy on yourself and get a front cut of the same year/model as your car... saves alot of stuffing around.

Thanks for all your suggestion. I am keeping my option open at the moment. I totally have no know how at all. I have to rely on mechanic's hand.

Thanks

What do you need exactly?
ej20t, loom, ECU, Centre diff, tailshaft and rear diff/axles.
Is that about it?

I dunno, with the GC/GF if I was getting someone else to do it I'd go for the latest and best spec'd 'cos you've gotta change all your wire/dash/air anyway so why remain stuck in pre-history?

I can see your point with early Legacy/Liberty transplants, but Imprezas are a much more forgiving beast in this regard, even GDs. Think it might have a lot to do with a more developed rally build for parts interchange in service parks or something.

There are a number of WS that do this type of thing very well, notably in Wangara, Kenwick and Kelmscott.

Let your fingers do the walking and a few people clue you in, then decide who you're happiest with.

I know what your saying but im talking about ease of fitment. I have a 96 gx and am fitting a 98 wrx driveline. Mechanically it all bolts up but electrically is a different story. I need to change all the wiring harness but as i am using the 98 harness i need to change plugs for some parts, splice others. I am lucky enough to have found a dash cluster from a 97 wrx that has the electronic speedo so i just need to sort out the wiring for that and the other bits on the dash. Had i got a whole front cut however i could have just used the entire dash from donor vehicle and it would have all been sweet.

Yeah, true. I've always been a bit of a believer in dealing with a decent half cut which can donate all the JDM gear. Really can't see the point of trying to splice something together in a car that is esentially PnP. I know there are times when for whatever reason you have no choice...but shit I'm happy enough with a 180 speedo considering you'll hardly ever see it do that (*ahem* on the road anyway one would hope).
