Sti engine conversion
Hey guys.
The mrs is looking at purchasing a '96 sti front cut for her '96 wrx. The motor has done 67,000km which imo, is pretty good for a '96 (jap km's ) I just have a couple of questions for ya's and would be great if you could help us out.... I would go check everything myself but just to busy with work and I don't really know much and she knows less than me 1. Is this motor ('96 sti) an EJ207/EJ205 (where would I find this no.)? 2. Does it come with the so called 'forged pistons', slightly bigger cams etc the later sti's have and stuff? 3. What turbo does this motor come with standard? 4. Would the gear ratio on these be 4.44? Apparently, because its a jap spec model or some sh!t, the standard jap spec ecu provided in the front cut won't work on the oz spec model rex's, nor will her stock ecu The guy has suggest the mrs to get an aftermarket ecu. She brought my autronic smc off me (nothing in life is free these days) but it was off my '98 wrx. Would this wire/plug straight into the '96 loom or would she need a '98 wrx loom as the guy's who selling the motor have actually said it will but I thought i'd better get some professional advice first lol? Any suggestions, comments etc would be greatly appreciated, but please, I dont wanna here any "why is she doing that", "she should get a". She's already made up her mind, and an sti motor it is! Cheers Mat

if your getting a 96 front cut just get a normal WRX one.
There is such little difference between the STI and WRX of that generation its not worth the extra expense of the STI front cut. They both run the same turbo (td05) and both have 380cc injectors.

yup, 96 is version 2, STi's of that era were simply a WRX taken off the production line and "Tuned by STi", as MrTwo said, TD05, same injectors and angle mounted intercooler etc.
as for the conversion, if you went the whole hog, and swapped the loom with the motor the ecu would work fine (with 98 octane!) but i believe the ADM vs JDM ECUs will need a couple of pins swapped? gearbox is probably 4.44, block may well be closed deck EJ20 but the cams would be stock. 1997 is the way to go for an early GC8, Ver 3 STi got the dirty big cams, different turbo, intercooler etc. Nothing too wrong with the ver2 sti, if rob can push 310hp through liberty heads and a td05 with an M800 in prototype, you should be able to get some decent reliable power out of that motor!

Version 2 STi's go pretty good. Some have DCCD boxes with close ratios, forged pistons, solid lifters with under bucket shims, 8.5mm lift cams, closed deck and a redundant 5th injector on the top.
Admittedly version 3 is when you get lots more goodies like 4 piston brakes, straight inlet turbo, bigger cams and injectors but the price if 1/2 cuts jumps significantly. Version 2 stuff will go straight into an Aussie 96 without too many dramas and will give a substantial improvement in my opinion. Incedentally, I need an Autronic for a 1998 if yours is surplus??? |
