ppg gearset 0, Wrx 1
yeah my gearbox had an unfortunate turn of events this week.
6.5k of cogs and labour, (only 18 months old and well maintained) possibly completely gone. Seems the synchro ring got pulled into the teeth somehow?!?! and then shredded thru the whole box. its still drivable but makes a horrendous noise, so at the moment it is sitting idle. drained the tranny oil, which was a nice shiny silver, and removed portions of metal which cna only be from the synchro ring. it doesnt seem like a bearing or teeth. atm box hasnt been opened so hoping its an easy and relatively cheap fix. if the cogs are damaged, well... nuff said, ill be getting rid of the whining straight cuts in favour of a sti 6 speed. gg ppg |

plus if i ever sell the car after, many people look at straight cut gears as overkill with too much noise.
personally it took a few months for me to get used to the noise, especially when 5th was the only silent gear. 6 speed looks better everytime i think about it, i may even get the ppg box fixed and sell it in favour of a 6speed sti box. |

haha
Ill see what happens and its a different horrendous noise than the cute whine of the gears, its more of a scratching scraping bad noise |

Go the the Six speed conversion. The 6MTs are dropping in price pretty quickly and you can pick a STI 6MT with a front LSD for like $4.5K easily nowadays. Cheaper than a PPG rebuild
