Potential Pinging?!?!
Hey all
When i kick the Rex over, underneath the regular boxer sound and injector clicking i can here a slight metallic tinkle. When i rev it slightly it makes it again but it is slightly more prominant. If you listen for it you can hear it as you drive also. I have just stuck a TurboXS MBC and set it to ~14.5, so i dont understand why it would be pinging, if it is indeed pinging? Since installing the MBC, i have noticed the car is a fair bit perkier and boosty. Is the car indeed pinging, because it doesnt make the metallic tinkle-winkle all the time, and it isnt super loud. I have an 02 STI bottom end, so apparantly (according to Tim Slako @ West Racing) it should make a tinkle sound when it first starts while the forgies are warming up? I run the car on BP Premium 95RON Unleaded, perhaps i should recet the ecu after the MBC installation? Cheers, and sorry for the long post Zach |

95RON is probably your problem, especially with the hot weather in broome. If Hedland and Newman have Ultimate surely Broome must have it? Give it a try and see how you go.

its sounds like waste gate flutter. What turbo have you got?

Stock TD05...
Not sure of the version of the bottom end, have to ring Tim@ West Racing to find out for sure. No Ultimate here unfortunately yet, fingers crossed |

take the boost control off, and put it back to standard and see if it still does it...If it stops, then i can say it will be gate flutter. Very common and easily fixed.

if its doing it on idle with no load, it cannot in anyway be pinging.
Its probably the pistons warming up when cold, and possibly the the injectors ticking away as per normal. If the bleed valve is in cabin it will carry noise thru to the cabin as well.

Have taken the bleeder off, and reset the ECU and now all is normal, which is a bit of a pity. Had a play with it yesterday before hand and managed to get it to stop making the noise, that is at a poor 9psi.
Bit of a mystery, and difficult to solve because all of the mechanics here are s#$t |
