Snapped wheel studs - common?
Hi all
Within the last few months I have experienced 3 snapped wheel studs on the same rim!!!! Is this common? What could cause this? I got the first stud fixed by the tyre place that last worked on my car. Cheers, Dazza |

something wrong with the hub perhaps? maybe a previous kerb hit has caused this?

Do a search - I think there was a thread on this a coupla years ago. Yes, overtightening is a threat to studs. While a proper mechanic may not need a torque wrench, a casual helper or beginner can easily overdo it with a rattle gun.
If you have had 3 snapped studs on the same rim, replace the others, and check on who has been changing your wheels. |

if its the rims in your avatar you may have an answer ... poorly machined rim or one missing the ring that centres it on the hub.
I had no issues ever, then swapped rims - snapped 7 studs over 4 months - changed rims again, never had an issue after.

As all the above, or the new ones can be either the wrong wheel studs or installed incorrectly.
I snapped a few on my old 32. Few being I pulled over after dropping a skid and the rim was held on my one nut. I then didn't have time to change them myself so I got a tyre shop to fit them. They were installed incorrectly, as the same 4 snapped the day later. Just be cautious if you decide to do them yourself they are done properly and if you take it to get done, once again, be cautious for unknown workshops. 99km/h down the freeway, seeing glowing pieces of steel over heat and snap off, causing a small fireball down the freeway is not good. Obviously dangerous if you loose a rim having runs or something.

You should not be snapping studs like that...obviously something is amiss.
Check hub play If aftermarket rims make sure you have quality hub locators. Wheel nuts should be torqued to 65 ft/lb...no more. |

Same stud keeps breaking or different ones?

Hi all
Thanks for the quick feedback. These rims were on the car prior to me buying it about 18months ago but the snapping has only occurred in the past few months. Perhaps the studs have fractures in them from a previous incident?? I've had the rims rotated too so if it's a suspect rim then it should start occurring in the rear u'd think. I'm pretty sure the stud that was replaced earlier hasn't snapped. I'm taking it back into the tyre shop tomorrow morning. They're helping me out which is good rather than telling me to fob off. Hi again
Got my car back from the tyre shop yesterday. The only thing they think it can be is a problem with a lip on the rim that prevents the hub from sitting flush. Basically they're saying that there are two lips on the hidden side of the rim and only one is making contact with the hub. The fit not being snug is putting pressure on the studs in their opinion. Recommendation was to machine off the lips or buy new rims. Sounds like a fair enough cause but I wonder why I haven't seen it on the other hubs yet....? Are there special inserts you can buy to create a snug fit? Machining a good idea? Dazza |
