Default How much caster is too much ?

Lib 05 GT, Cusco Zero-2e(+bars and braces), lowered ~20mm from std ride hieght :

Just aligned and I have almost 5.8 degrees caster on the front(no anti lift/caster kit(don`t make one for this car)...just the Cusco`s), running -1 degree camber on all 4 wheels!

Is too much caster a bad thing ? more camber needed to compensate maybe ?

Cheers

The more castor the better. Castor will generate more -ve camber when the wheels are turned too, so will help you in the corners. But it depends on how you drive!

+1 for castor .. Helps turnin big time, allows you to keep the power down during cornering and helps prevent understeer.

Sure it has a negative effect on tyre wear, but just get the balance right and you're all good. I noticed it immediately.

Excessive castor will make the steering heavy at slow speeds and make the car unstable in reverse at speed. Nothing you can't live with and yours isn't excessive at 5.8 deg anyway. Another symptom is the car will 'fall' onto full lock, You ever driven an LC/LJ Torana Justin? They do it, you get about halfway to full lock and the steering just takes off to full lock, you need arms like Popeye to pull it back. It's due to car dropping down as the wheels turn, you're effectively having to lift the front back up to straight ahead.

Thanks guy`s

OK fair enough, so that much castor isn`t such a bad thing/excessive, kewl.
Yes Doug I love the way old holdens handle...driven many LJ torry`s etc, I just though the fight and whip you get out of the steering was there to help you do sic circle work and catch the power pole on the way out

So how about camber.....is -1 enough for your average traffic light GP driver ?

I must say the car is totally tranformed by the coil overs(thanks jme) which appear not to be harsh or rough at all(for coil overs), and the e-con in car adjustment rocks when aproaching a round about or set of corners you want to loose someone in , dial up 5, brake late, hit it and flick hard.....its just a pity I can`t sit the guard on the rim because of getting up and down my driveway.....floorpan scrapping is a really horrible sound ! ~15-20mm lower than std is pussy.

cheers

Castor will not have -ive effect on tyre wear. Camber will.

5-6 degrees is a really nice amount of castor. High castor + good dynamic camber.

You could run about -2 front and -1 rear without being likely to see any real uneven tyre wear as long as it gets a reasonable amount of enthusaistic driving round corners.

I agree, i run -2.3 deg and my tyres wear flat, not on the inside edge.

OK, so today I`m going to drop the car back down 6mm all round(not happy with 4wd style ride hieght...after driving the car with it 20mm down from where it is now I`m spoilt...it was fantastic to drive at that hieght, looked hot ...but made be cringe when floor pan bolts dragged along concrete of the driveway...screeeeeech) and get the alignment re-done next week... I`ll go for ;

-1 camber rear(need adjustabvle arms to get anymore in rear anyway...but maybe lowering a little may add a little)
-1.5 camber front
Leave caster ...can`t adjust it anyway ! unless I change tops or possibly spin them.

Any recommendations on ride hieght ? dead level ? jacked ? squat ?
Any recommendations on rear toe settings ?

Cheers

Slightly lower at the rear was generally the go for memory. There should be some known heights that work for the leggy. Measure from wheel centre up to edge of wheel arch. Wilkinsons Suspension can help with all this stuff. Go and have a chat to Brett or Peter.
