Checked brake lights in the rear. All in working order, even the middle thin strip.

handbrake light will be a signle wire attatched to a crappy looking switch on the base of the handbrake mount itself

When the light is on, if you pull on the handbrake does it get brighter?

could be swtich then, unplug it and see what happens...
