Default Steam/smoke bonnet scoop

hey guys

Just then at rexpo for the record attemp, halfway through the parade lap i saw a small amount of steam or white smoke pop come out of my bonnet scoop which later dissappeared

However engine tempreture and everything seem the same, at the end of the parade i poped my bonnet and everything appeared to be okay, then noticed 1 drop of what appears to be oil on the black cover at the top of the engine. There seems to be markings on the splitter that looked like abit of fluid has got through there

What kind of problem could this be, currently the car is running fine and just had a verso last thursday and the oil just toped up on the same day. There doesn't appear to be alot of oil loss either

Cheers

Adrian

Are you sure it is oil? I know I had a tiny leak in my top radiator hose which steamed through the scoop and left splashes on my windscreen. I'm no expert, but just past experience.

no i dont have a ATMOS BOV its stock valve, well i had a mate look at it and hes almost certain its oil, im myself not so sure it is oil, its just one drop on the black cover. The steam/smoke just came out of the bonet scoop, NOT alot but alittle enough to notice it, but it quickly dissapeared after a few secs

However its fairly strange but there is afew markings on the splitter, prior to that the car was idling for about 3 to 5 minutes. The radiator has no visual leaks as it would have sucked water from the reserve tank so i am not sure what it is

Anybody who could shed alittle light on this would be greatly appreciated. Until then the car is running perfectlly alright having just done a VERSO and will keep eye on tempretures

If you thinks its oil.... take a look at the cam cover gaskets and bolt seals. Oil can leak out there and drip onto the exhaust manifold and burn off with white smoke.

Are your headers heat-wrapped ?
Mine sometimes collects a bit of water during rain then it sends steam out through the scoops as they are drying off.

nah my headers arn't. Car is completely stock with just an exhaust, filter, TMIC and a VERSO. Well even if it was heatwraped it happened today at the record attempt at barbagallo. Pretty hot day it was certaintly strange,i heard if you have worn out intercooler Y pipes oil can leak and burn off there through the intercooler and can pop out out of your scoop? is this true?

Ive just got the TMIC put in with a new silicon Y pipe and all fitted by ASG so i'm doubtful there would be a problem there :S

I'm guessing i'll just drive the car as it is, its running fine atm so i'll just keep an eye out for anything unussual. Not much point looking into less then 4 secs of small amounts of white smoke/steam, need something more to work on if there is a problem

i have a similar thing with my 98 wrx, doesnt happen all the time tends to in the mornings if it does, and get white funky smelling smoke coming out the scoop and the vent above the pod. seemed to be an on and off thing and she doesnt seem to lose any oil really, so i thought that maybe it was radiator fluid possibly, but still got no idea.

had a knee op recently so took her for first spin in bout 6 weeks but there was a good bit of what looked to be oil on the exhaust between the turbo and the air intake kinda area.

if anyone can shed any light it would be awesome!

cheers.

Check the coolant hose that runs into the turbo. The clamp on mine was loose and I had been smelling coolant for weeks.
