Default Turbo Upgrade

I am looking to upgrading the turbo in my my00 WRX (gc8 chassis), but don't want to overdo it. I mainly drive it around town (quickly ) but want a nice noticable power increase, I have done some research and am thinking about a vf35, just looking for advice/opinions on what to do.

too much lag?

only looking for about 500 rpm extra, looks like the extra power from the 34 gives about 100-150 more than that.
