Hi all,

I am in the process of purchaing an 05 STi. The car is completely stock and in awesome condition.

One thing that was odd is that the guy told me that with STi's in general, if you do not drive or start them for about 4 days, the battery goes flat so he said be sure to start it up every coupld of days if I am not driving it. He has had the car since new and he said it happened since he got the car and Subaru said it was normal due to all the electrics and security system.

Quite frankly, I do not buy it. To me it sounds like an alternator issue, faulty diodes perhaps as I have experienced this before with another vehicle.

However I would like to know if anyone has experienced this issue.

There are no mods at all to the car not even an aftermarket alarm or any electricals so I doubt that Subaru would see this as acceptable.

Let me know your thoughts as I have not put any money down as yet but if this is a big issue then I will not even bother with the auto inspection tomorrow.

You should be able to leave it for about 2-3 weeks without starting, if it's any less I would say its the battery on the way out (being 05 if it has the factory fitted battery it would be on its last legs now). But if the owner is telling the truth (rather than just admitting its needs a new battery) and it has been happening since new I would not think its acceptable, if its still under warranty make sure it gets fixed.

Only way its in that condition if its not been driven reguarly or has been parked up for a while. If it still stockers battery then yes most likely on its way out, so $125 cost for replacement hv duty battery.

nah thats not right. the sti 06 that i just bought was sitting at the dealer for 6 weeks while i was over east and the battery was good as gold, and mine has all the 'lectronics on it too. however i'd say that it's just the battery on the way out and not holding the charge anymore. either way get the alt checked out etc

These days i drive a company car and use the WRX on the weekend.
I have a MY06 STi. If i don't run it on the weekend, the battery is dead flat by the following week.

same ^^^^^ i got a work ute for during the week so i'll see tomorrow if it starts slow/died. hasnt been started since last sunday

sounds dodgy to me - wonder what else he's not telling you???

I was just more so worried about it being something else. The battery or the alternator is easily fixed but if it is some little electrical thing that is not easily diagnosed is what will annoy me.

I dont start mine for 2 weeks at a time, leave the alarm fully armed, no charger, and never had a problem starting it. not even a whimper. 06 STi no mods until last week.

make sure that the stereo system isnt running while the car is turned off.
a friend went on a hol. when he returned couldnt figure out why the batt went flat after a week. i heard the tape deck of all things was running which prob drained the batt.
