Crunching gearbox!!
Hey guys
Just after some advice with my gears, when changing from 3rd to 2nd im getting a pretty loud crunch plus it also occasionally happens from 5th to 4th. Now is this a gearbox issue or maybe a clutch issue?? (excuse the lack of knowledge). Ive tried searching but nothing really answers my question but if someone knows can u point me in the right direction please. Thanks Luke

Without hearing it in person we can only speculate. Since it is happening on downshifts to 2nd and 4th it could be
1: a selector issue 2: clutch 3: synchros Check your clutch fluid and make sure it's full. Check your gearbox oil and make sure it's full. Top up if required. See your mechanic if symptoms persist. EDIT: Do you rev match on down shift (heel/toe)??

Is it only happening on downshifts? Also you are making sure the car is fully clutched when shifting?

1. dump your gearbox oil, check for metal bits on the plug and oil
If you have metal, save up for new box No metal, good 2. No issue from 4th to 3rd? 4th to 5th? 2nd to 3rd? Dodgy synchros can do this Cheap/quick fix - Redline shockproff gearbox oil, aka smurf snot |

and for the oils if not the light weight shock proof try the super light weight shock proof (yellow) i herd that's better for the rs lib boxes. Last edited by BrennyV; 25-08-2008 at 04:13 PM. |

yea all down shifts it seems to be doing it but have found 3rd to 2nd is the worst. another thing not sure if it means anything but only seems to do it once the car warms up. yea i do clutch all the way in wen changing and no i dont heel n toe downshift i think it was.
so dump the gearbox oil n check for metal bits, hope to god there is none otherwise looking at a new box yay!! lol. if i find no metal bits just buy this oil and problem solved yea?? cheers for the advice guys

You will find that 3rd to 2nd will make a louder noise because the difference in shaft speed will be greater (as a %) in the lower gears. As you go up through the gears, even though road speed increases, the % difference in shaft speed between gears decreases. When you enter 5th (which is under driven like 0.707:1 or something) you'll find it won't make the noise. The synchros are what help to enable the 2 shafts to match speeds, thus making a crunch free shift. If you find bits of metal stuck to the drain plug of the gear box (the plug is magnetic, or at least should be) or shiny bits in the dropped oil, then I think you'll have your answer: worn synchos.
