Default Alternator

Hey guys

My alternator shat itself so im in need for a new one.
I've been quoted $350 for a replacement one for my MY94, but i remember reading somewhere that its better to replace it with maybe a forrester GT 1...
as the wrx ones are not very powerful
Im not sure if this is just usual internet talking crap or if someone actually knows what they are talking bout soooo.....
Anyone have any ideas on this, or is the standard one more than capable??

Cheers
Matt

Is it low on output or has your charge light just come on. The reason i ask is that my alternator shit itself om my gt foz not long ago. It was because the guy who washed the engine down at the servioce got water in there and blew the voltage reg. It was about 150 bucks for a new 1. have your looked into overhauling your own alternator?

I'd be getting a price on reconditioning/overhauling it first. We have to replace/refurbish heaps of alternators at my work, we go thru Kenwick Auto Electrics and its always substantially cheaper than a new unit. Cant hurt to get a quote first.

Got a quote on overhauling it and the cost of parts and labour to do it out weighed the cost of buying a new one.

Ive had a bit of experience overhauling alternators with my job (aircraft engineer) Its sounds like its prob just the brushes wearing out on the slip rings as this causes the voltage to drop and send electronic spikes thru the rest of your electrical system. I overhauled the alternator on my old subaru and the one i have now. If you do it yourself you should save a bit of cash. If you want a hand let us know.
