Default Removing CVs from axle

Hi all,

I have a 94 wrx and am replacing my CV boots at the moment, and all is going well, except for one thing: How do I remove the CVs from the axle? I need to do this to get the new boots on and thought the CVs would be held on with some kind of circlip or something inside, but I can't seem to find any. Any help would be great.

Cheers,
Graeme

Is the roll pin the one that holds the axle in? I have knocked that one out and the axle is out of the car at the moment, but I am trying to get the CVs off the axle.

I think that once the boot is of, the cup just slides off. No circlip in them I hope, otherwise mine is missing them.

removing inner joint requires removal of boot, then removal of the bell which is the bit that goes into the gearbox, then removal of the tripod by removing the circlip on the end of the shaft. Pretty straight forwards.

Removal of the outer joint can be easy and can be hard. They hit off the shaft and are held by a retaining clip that usually operates correctly and the shaft will seperate from the joint. you hit the inner cage, close to the shaft whyle holding the shaft in a vice. (this is after removing the boot) if not you will have to destroy the joint to get it off.

Cool, I only need to get one of them off anyway, then I will be able to get both the boots on, so if I take off the inner it should be fine.

Cheers for your help

Inner - slide boot down. then push cup down and get a screwdriver in to flick out the clip that runs around the cup on the inside. that will then slide over the tripod (or cage and balls depending on the joint)
there is then a circlip holding the tripod in place (again -or the race) which will then tap off once removed (NOTE - do not mix up the way it came off. they must go on the same way)
then you can do both boots. and dont forget the grease - lots of it.

Alternatively the Outer will hit off the shaft (hit the outside of the joint dont be worried if it dents a little) with a bit of force (some being very tight) holding the shaft in the joint and holding the CV with one hand and the hammer with the other (you dont want the CV flying off)

it will hit back on but again can be a pain if the clip on the shaft has oversized from age.

much safer to take the inner off IMO unless youve got experience.

(i do these weekly...all part of my job)

Another quick one, what is the torque setting for the center hub nut?

Cheers,
Graeme

EDIT: Got it (174 lb-ft)
