We'll thats a hard question. Its a problem that ive heard of alot, making it a little bit common, but its not a problem you should just let go if that is what you are asking. It sounds like Synchros in your gearbox possibly. I suggest getting it looked at as it might result in you chipping teeth and sending shards of teeth into 3rd and/or other gears.

This then results in tears.

im getting a new engine and gear box soon anyway so i was hoping it was something i could adjust so cant be bothered, im not looking to spend money on it
thinking of that what is everyones opinion on the 6 speed would it be a good choice for a gear box upgrade in a liberty or just stick with the 5 speed ive got because im changing the engine to a wrx turbo motor

Drain oil, get the dirty shit out, arm yourself with some redline lightweight shock proof for you gearbox.

Warm the car up before you drive it, let the Gbox oil to get warm up as well driving with low revs. Should feel the difference soon as you drive it. Give it load once you think is pretty good, and you shall return with a smile.
