Default Diff rebuild?

I've been advised (by RMS) that my diff has carked itself. I have been given the two options of a full rebuild or to just purchase another second hand.

Which would you guys/girls choose and why?

What's wrong with the diff? Chipped teeth of the crown wheel and pinion or the diff centre stuffed? Either way, get a price from RMS to rebuild the diff and ring Japanese Wholesale Spares (9302 3519) for the price of a replacement unit.

If its just the spider gears stuffed and you decide to replace it let me know, I may buy it off you.

Option 3: Fit a plated LSD...fairly noisy and a lot more $$ but it allows you to enjoy the rear wheel drive bias that only the dccd STI's have just discovered. They are a much stronger option if doing any form of motorsports. Try a R160 Kaaz, Cusco or even a genuine Subaru 1.5 LSD.

Otherwise go the cheapest option second hand from Dodgy Dazza and stop doing hand brake turns They generally last a lot longer if you run regularly changed Redline Heavy Weight Shock Proof Oil.

Well I've decided to go for a full rebuild. Waiting on parts from Sydney. I was advised that my current diff had no hairline fractures so a rebuild would prove more costly, but more effective in the long run.

My diff was recently purchased second hand and fitted by --- ( i won't say to protect company), but they failed to fill it with oil (I'm sure it was an honest mistake ). The oil that was left eventually ran dry and yeah that caused trouble.

I'm no mechanic but as soon as I started hearing a faint whirring (howling) noise I took it into RMS. Even by then some damage had been done.

I've been informed by RMS that I should have the car back before Rexpo.

Thanks for all the feedback and guys willing to sell me their diff.

Cheers
