Default gearbox question /wrx quality/price check

hi, im new to the forum and hopefully ill be staying with my first time buying a WRX.

but first, before i make the purchase i need to know will the gearbox give way soon if its changing into 2nd a little hard? has anyone had any experience with this? its an automatic btw. with a previous car my father had it had the same symptoms and it died fairly soon afterwards. the guys at allstar garage couldnt say (could be soon, could be 5 years), but it definitely needs service.

and also at around what price would i expect for a 100k major service?

and got small description of the rex at bottom for your thoughts

thanks in advance.

gear box might need new fluid seeing that its 100k.

also 100k service is around the 1k mark give or take.

Have you looked into any manual boxes? After a while you might wish you had got one so test drive some before making the purchase

Any AWD gearbox will take a beating if its being smashed into second hard alot because its got to give somewhere, rwd's give way at the tyres aswell as fwds but when you have twice the grip it'll try and go at your clutch (if manual), box (man/auto) or cv shafts.

As was said above atleast replace the oil but if you have some mechanical knowledge its always a good idea to swap oils and stuff when you buy a used car, can never trust people selling cars and if they tell you the car has "Forged jap internals and goes hard for a stocker" ignore them they are just trying to sell the car lol.

What year are you looking at, and what price tag is attached?

The Tiptronic version WRX was only used in the Peanut Eye I thought.

lol, well, sadly im one of those few guys whos got an auto licence (due to circumstances and decision which i regret but can drive manual a little bit but rather not be caught driving without a licence).

its a silver anniversary 98 wrx with 131k, asking 13k. just got prepurchase inspection, everything is a-ok except for 100k service. its totally stock except for 18" chromies and comes with stockies. few scratches on outside and could do with new door panel arm-rest on inside otherwise everything is looking good :P

i have the most basic beginners knowledge on mechanics so i was looking at this to start somewhere (yes, even though its auto). but heard autos you dont have to worry about wrong timing for shifts so could be a +!

please discuss .

To be honest, learning to drive a manual now, getting your manual license will be cheaper and easier than doing a manual conversion down the track or trying to sell to buy a manual.
If you need lessons I'll give you a few if you want! Always willing to help out another pwrxer
Also maybe get some guys to take you for a spin in a manual to get an idea of how it drives compared to auto?

If you STILL decide on auto (shame) do as has been said and get the service done and oils changed and be nice to your car and you will be fine

Maybe he wants an automatic, just remember if it shits itself it's probably much cheaper to buy a 2nd hand one than having it rebuilt.
