Heat wrap tape is hell cheap. Might just wrap for now as funds are needed on other projects first.
Hey hows yours holding up. Heard there were a few cases of it pealing off a few years ago. Guessing the paints are much better now but did make me wonder.
very slight bit of flaking around the collectors,
but I spose anti lag does make them get a tad warm!
I have had 1 plastic undertray and parts of the frame on the drivers side thermo fan suffer a bit of heat distortion.
I did not wrap mine aswell, I am not a huge fan of the wrap, I have seen it fall apart many times on manifolds. I used the roll of wrap that came with my headers on the dump pipe.

Are you running the sort that is a bit of a jumble of pipes on one side or the Perrin style that uses the cutout on the sump. Apparently the Perrin ones sit higher than the messy ones so I'm hoping the under tray will be fine.

+1 for ceramic coating, inside and outside the pipes.
recommend the guys in kelmscott also.

jungleboy 05-04-2009 09:59 AM

Ceramic coating is the way to go. It looks so much nicer and is alot easier to see the condition of the headers, like any cracks or corrosion.

I have ceramic coated UEL headers and also used the head wrap that came with the headers on the dump pipe. I'm glad I coated mine instead of wrapping because the plastic undertray is very close to the headers just before the collector, if I had used wrap, the wrap would easily be pressing on the undertray and would most likely melt it. But as I said earlier, that is with the UEL headers, so EL might be ok.

Reflexwrx,

I'm running equal length Twin Scroll Spec C Headers, and as Tuna said - its a clean crisp sound with just a touch of boxer burble still left. I've given up on the whole attention seeking loud exhaust thing and just wanted the shortest spool time possible with my twin scroll setup.

Thumbs up for CIC in Kelmscott - did that to my headers and Turbo exhaust housing as well.

I also have a spare complete roll of header / exhaust wrap here if your looking for some. Should be fairly cheap.

WRXTASY, I will get my headers ceramic coated later and wrap for them for now. How many meters of the wrap do you have? I would be keen to grab it if possible.

reflexwrx 05-04-2009 10:53 AM

Would like to get these bad boys wrapped before I fit them up to the engine.

Strubaru 05-04-2009 11:11 AM

i've heard bad things from only wrapping them as it keeps the heat in the header pipes themselves compared to when you ceramic coat them inside & out it keeps the heat inside the pipes

hope that makes sense

better explain here: http://www.centuryperformance.com/exhaust-header-heat-wraps-do-not-use-spg-138.html

reflexwrx 05-04-2009 11:54 AM

Maybe I won't wrap them then. So much contradicting information out there. I'll wait till I have the cash to ceramic coat them.
