Default Help Fitting Clutch

Hey guys, finally my STI engine is ready to be dropped into my 99 WRX. I need advice on fitting the clutch before I hoist the engine and attempt to bolt the engine to the gear box. I'm having trouble with the the thrust bearing and clip. Does the thrust bearing remain on the forks or do I put it on the engine side. This is really confusing me, does anyone have a manual pdf form?

Ooops edit post because I miss read. What sort of advice do you mean? A few things to remember are when doing it up do it up like wheel nuts, asin a star pattern not one after the other.
The spline tool that comes with the Excedy clutches is a very handy tool for getting the clutch all line up aswell.
With the pull type clutch don't do what I did and forget to connect the thrust bearing properly and then spend ages "fishing" it when the whole things back together haha. Sometimes the littlest things make the biggest annoyance to do later.

Other than that its all straight forward?

1. Make sure flywheel surface and clutch cover surface has no oil. Wipe it down with some grease remover. I also gave the surface a light scuff with a bit of sandpaper. Try doing this with clean hands.

2. Make sure the housing has no grease or oil around as well.

3. Line the shit up, and make sure you do all the bolts up evenly and tight. You might have to jam something on the side of the flywheel, so it doesnt spin while u tighten them.

4. After all that...Wiggle the box on nice and slowly and evenly.

Surely theres more, but thats all i can think of.

Make sure you dont do what I did and pinch the black shitty cover that covers the gap at the bottom where the engine and gearbox meet. Made a rather scary sound when I started it up as it rubbed on the flywheel. No damage done but still a silly thing to get wrong.

You will also need a 10mm allen key (preferbaly on a socket so you can put a breaker bar on it) aswell to get the inspection hole open.

The exedy clutches come with a instruction sheet on how to change the clutch.

Can anyone tell me if the thrust bearing should be on the gearbox before i drop the engine in. Or do i attach it to the clutch then try and fit. I'm stumped!

Can do it either way. Just make sure the retaining ring is sitting in the fingers correctly. I left the thrust bearing on the box when I put mine together. When you get the box lined up and sitting right, put a bolt or 2 in and push the clutch lever back and make sure it engages.

thrust bearing is the one that goes on the input shaft, coming out the gearbox, and the fork clips into it. correct me if i'm wrong

Definitely on the input shaft/gearbox housing. Once the gearbox is on, the fork is pushed towards the firewall. This will engage the thrust bearing onto the clutch cover.

yep bolt clutch to flywheel, thrust bearing slides onto the gearbox (apply a small amount of grease so it slides nicely on the cover for the input shaft) install clutch fork onto bearing & slide the bearing towards the back of the box as far as the fork will let it go, install engine, then slide the clutch fork forwards to engage the bearing into the pressure plate, you will hear it click
