Go to a store and buy a K&N Recharge Kit, use water to clean out the filter (from inside to out, so that you dont embed the grit deeper into the filter) and then use a soft paint brush to brush larger bits and pieces.

Once completed, lightly spray the filter and allow it to dry a bit, you'll see it tinge red over the oiled filter element sections.

I would soak the filter in a solvent like petrol or degreasing fluid. This gets rid of the oil and any debris from the filter. Without the oil you can now easily get rid of any crap stuck in the filter, best method would be to jus hit it with air from the inside blowing any reside out. Allow filter to dry, shouldn't take long as solvent should evapourate fairly quickly. Then I'd use a can of K&N filter oil and lightly coat the filter in oil, do not over oil the filter!

Personally I have just stuck with the cleaning kit. You may find it at super shit but i think you will probably have to go somewhere more specialised. I think A1 performance has em (at least I think that is what they are called) down on Norma road Myaree. (Brain is a bit rusty on the local street names...but look out..I will be back in the Gee end of next week...Look forward to seeing the black beast..)

Just give it a good soak with the cleaner and let it stand for 10 mins. Then I tend to use warm water at the sink and rinse it from inside to out. Let it dry comepletely and then oil lightly.

To oil my pod, I normally start where the small silver rod runs from top to bottom and just do one lap of the pod using even strokes with the can held maybe 20cm from the pod. You just want an even mist all over it that is absorbed into the filter media and not have it dripping with oil.

Over oiling on the early model rexes could have negative impact on the AFM. In general I think over oiling would just restrict flow.
