What Tyre??

All,

Putting 18's on my GC8, what tyres would be best :-

225/40/18 or

225/35/18

cheers

I'm running 225/35R18 as they are only a few mm difference in diameter to the stock 16's.

Makoto 16-01-2010 11:04 AM

40 will give you a more comfy ride.....if your car is lowered, i believe you may need to go for the 35...

ALEX. 16-01-2010 02:10 PM

Aren't 35s too short height wise, in terms of space between rim and top surface of tyre?

Years ago, when i went to replace my tyres which came with the car (had 225/35 18s), i was told there could be insurance issues because they were too thin and that insurance may not cover me in a crash. "Oh your tyres were too thin; the reason you bounced and crashed when you went over that pothole was because of a lack of dampening, caused by a very low tyre profile. And now you get no moniez" or something like that.
Similar to why suspension can't be too stiff.

Just going by what I was told. I changed to 16s when i realised that being safe (insurance-wise) and going up to 40's would mean bulk scrapage on a GC8.

Could be wrong don't hurt me

im running 225/40/18 and im telling you now worst mistake ever, i've got my guards rolled and when you take a corner at a reasonable speed the guard will still touch the tyre . dont even think about having people in the back even worse. o forgot to mention my car aint even lowered yet.

doubt 35 profile will be even better, you might aswell go for 17's.

While on topic, whats the widest tyre you can fit on a 17x7.5" rim?

If anyone is getting tyres should really check out a seller [option1garage] on Skyline australia...Ill copy and paste some of the prices.

Pretty sure as long as the load rating of the tyre is within car manufacturers specs there shouldn't be an issue.

redlib 16-01-2010 03:28 PM

i get 225/40/18 $130 each brand new fitted and balanced

What brand of tyre for that price??

Yeah, but you'll find as you go lower profile, the load ratings go lower too.
Making tyre selection harder.

Gday Gav...

I have been running various 225/40/18's on 18x8's for about 3 years now. I only had scrub issues on the front under hard cornering when the car was illegally low. Now that I have the lowest point of the car at 102mm (under ALK), there hasnt been an issue. Ride is arguably a bit more forgiving in a 40, versus 35, however im sure its negligible.

225's are actually slightly more expensive than 235's, but again, difference is minimal.

Brent.
:)

STI325V6 16-01-2010 07:23 PM

I think I will go the 225/35's, what is the minimum load rating required to be legal?

Also been made aware that tyres in Aust must be DOT rated or the like!!

cheers

Hurtenstein 16-01-2010 07:58 PM

Its on the placard in the drivers door jam.
I think its 89U or 91U
All tyres these days a V speed rated so that parts fine.

col5555 17-01-2010 10:43 AM

Tempe tyres quoted me $160.00 each delivered for KUMHO KU31 225/45/17 if its any help. Best price I have found so far locally is $205.00 f & b.

jEstEr? 17-01-2010 06:22 PM

get the smallest wheels you can fit over your brakes, 18's are for posers

Hurtenstein 18-01-2010 07:35 PM

What if 18's are the only wheels that fit my brakes?
