Default Gearbox

Hey i seem too have chipped some theeth from my 1st gear and i have been ringing around for a new one at the wreckers.
they have have been around the 2k+ mark, or 2.8k with a read diff from JWS. But i have found one for 1300 just wondering its a bit cheap from a 97 wrx 4 bolt with 3 month or 5000km warrenty.
Just wondering if theres any way i can bring the gearbox too my mechanic too find out if its in all working order and good nick.
My car is also a 1998.

Thanks Matt

The cheapest and easiest way to find out if it's any good is to fit it to the car.
I don't know what your 5000km warranty will cover? Probably everything except gear breakage.
$1300 sounds about right for a private sale.

Not unless he has a crystal ball.

You can tell if it's rooted possibly, but you can't say for certain it's good. Even if you stripped it bare and spent a thousand dollars crack testing every part then reassembled it perfectly, it can still bust the first time you smash it into second.

Just make an agreement with the seller that it will have all gears, not whine, not cruch, not leak or jump out of gear. Make sure you know what the arrangement is regarding compensation payment for the fitting labour and oils if the thing's rooted when you fit it.

As for warranty. On a new car, backed by the manufacturer for the ~3yrs, 100,000km it's worth something. (not everything you think it is, but something)
Anything else, ie; dealer extended warranties, wrecker yard warranties, Forton warranties etc. are just a kick in the nuts if you ever try to claim.

General rule for GC/GF (give or take a few early ones that slipped through) is if the engine has the ignition coils on the passenger side of centre it will have an 8 bolt bellhousing. Coils in the centre of the manifold or coil on plug will be 4 bolt. You can easily fit an 8 bolt gearbox to a 4 bolt engine, just needs a stud for the starter installed. Going 4 bolt box on 8 bolt donk is uncool unless you're driving it straight to the dealer to trade it in!
