Default Can brass and aluminium be joined?

Been looking at ways to make a GD cooler fit my 98 engine. Due to the location of the IACV it is a pain in the ass. I have found one solution which is to use a 25mm brass elbow as the port for the BOV. I was intending on silver soldering this on.
I was chatting to someone on this and it was mentioned that te 2 metals might react and eat away at each other.

Anyone know if this is the case?

Hello, I am a boilermaker myself and was quite interested in this question, so I found this link on Youtube, yep it is not only for funny vids I guess.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGy7pHx6P3Y

I have some experience with soldering but never tried to join these alloys
and will leave that to an experienced solderer.
But you could try it on a test piece ( if possible) and see what happens.
Anyway good luck.

In a Subaru you can cover a great distance in a short period of time or a short distance great period of time.
The journey is more important than the destination.

Cheers for the link. Quite interesting. I wonder where I can buy these rods?
Trying to do this as cheap as possible so any other suggestions are welcomed.

Shouldn't mix metals like that from a corrosion perspective (Galvanic corrosion). Can't find an aluminium elbow?

Hey Cozza, it's pretty hard to see but we cut off the angled outlet & cut the original outlet pipe off an old top mount, welded that to a plate and welded the plate to the hole left where the angled piece was cut from, come have a look if you want.

i wouldnt do it if i were you. Welding with ali is very difficult because you have to pre heat the aluminium, which wont glow or give you any indication its at the right temperature until its in a puddle on the floor.
