I had a similar situation with a 1996 WRX back in the day. The car was always difficult to select reverse gear but they reckoned it was normal. When they pulled the box apart for an unrelated synchro 'upgrade' they tried to charge me $850 extra because the selector fork was bent and they claimed 'owner abuse'. I had documentation to show previous history of the fault so they had to cough up. (reluctantly)
Yeah they replaced the struts in April '10 due to this, even though the sound was still the same...
