Petrol smell, 01 Bug Eye Wagon

Hi people,

had a search through the forum and found a thread or 2 on this but i found no real confirmation of answers......

Only had the car a few days, its completely stock. Im getting a slight fuel smell on startup from around the rear drivers side, and when i pull up after driving its stronger and from the same area. Im losing no fuel that i can see, so before i jack the car up and have a look i just wondered if there was any common things to look for.
im thinking around the tank? fuel pump? gaskets etc.....

Thanks in advance

Check that the rubber seal along the top of the windows is properly fixed and doesn't have any tears in it.

The charcoal cannister is back there, black plastic box underneath the car with 3 hoses coming out of it. check around there for stains.
If your not sure, take it to a workshop, a car fire is not fun.

My wagon sat under a tarp for a few years and when I got it back on the road a couple of the hoses coming from the tank had split, lift your r/h rear seat and you'll see an oval plate with about 10 X 8mm bolts, take it off and check the connections coming from your tank, might need to start the car to see if it's leaking or stick your fingers in there to see if they get wet, also tighten the screws on the plate holding your fuel pump in place (under the plate you just took off).
There will be a similar set up on the other side too, after fixing all my hoses the car still stank with over half a tank, I checked that & it was finger tight letting fuel pour out on corners.

thanks very much for the advice fellas, will be jacking the car up to have a look over the long weekend. Will rope the old man who is a mechanic to have a look with me.

You won't see bugger all from underneath, all pipes & hoses run across the top of the tank which can't be dropped without removing half the arse end, pull the little tab at the back of the seat and all will be exposed.

little update on this.....

I seem to only get the strong smell when my petrol tank is full - 3/4 full?! I seem to remember reading something on here about people having the same problem on a full/nearly full tank... but cant remember what the issue was or how its resolved?

Only fill the tank half full.

Sorry mate it's just behind the seat, pop the carpet & you'll see everything..........been a while.

I mentioned in this post about one of the covers being finger tight.
