Default Ideas on replacing a busted g/box for a 98 GC8 WRX

Hey guys,
Ive just blown my 5sp gearbox in my 98 GC8 wrx, and would want to know some possible ideas on what option too take?? I've had a few quotes just too swap it for a 2nd hand one, but I've also seen a 1-2 PPG box for under $2500, which wasnt far off I was quoted for the 2nd hand box?? Is rebuilding an option??
Just wanted to know whats the best bang for bucks??

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Thumbs up

If it was me I'd just buy a 01-04 STi non DCCD 6spd box as its fairly indestructible.

Call Dougie at STechnic as he usually supplies and installs them for a good price.

budget up to $2.5K for a 4.44 5 speed installed.

If you are going to stick with the 5 speed, you may as well get a good one. 4.44 final drive speeds are the most durable.

Otherwise budget around $5K for a 6 speed upgrade. Its worth it and stronger than a 5 speed with PPG aftermarket gears. You can beat up on a 6 speed all day and it'll handle it no problems. Only downside is around 30kg of extra weight. fuck all really.

Ohh yeh sweet cheers for the help I'll give him a call. The busted gear was 2nd, from what I've heard its pretty common??

I'll have too look into the 6sp idea then, is it a very hard conversion?? Was thinking bout doing it myself but not too sure if I can commit to it....and in the mean time I'm riding a road bike in this beautiful perth weather.

Ive got a 4.11 rear diff and drive shafts to suit pm me if you need them at all depending on what route you take. Phil

In saying that though I would vote not attempting a six speed swap by yourself get e reputable workshop like Doug @ Stechnic to do it for you much less hassle

The 4.44 5 speed is a good option for an old 98 WRX that you probably don't want to throw $5000+ at unless it's pretty special.

They're a hell of a lot more durable than the 3.9 box the 98 came with, you'll struggle to find a 3.9 direct replacement as they're all rooted or half rooted already.

Budget on around $2200-$2500 for a decent 4.44 5 speed, matching rear diff and good oils installed.

No, you'll need to change BOTH of the rear driveshafts depending on whether the car has been tamered with from stock.

Better to return the 98 diff I sold you and swap it at no charge for a later 4.44 diff.

I'll be available on Saturday if need be, let me know how it turns out.
