Default 5Mt Gearbox Broken! Opinions Please Urgent.

Hey all,
Lastnight I was giving the wrx some curry and busted 2nd year. I don't know weather its worthwhile doing a 5mt JDM STI upgrade which needs a rear diff to suit or just stick a stocker back in.

My car is a MY99 Aus spec with GD STI TMIC, tinake mods, exhaust, apexi PFC and a tune, pushing 162awkw before TMIC upgrade. Im going to put a TD05 Big16g onto her when I have the money (will be longer wait now :/) to hit my goal of 200awkw.

So 6mt STI box are too expensive for me atm and this is my daily so it comes down to weather the 5mtSTI box is actually stronger then a STD box and worth the extra money?

OPINIONS PLEASEEE!Also any info relating to rear diff ratios I would need would be good. Dont want straight cut gears or dogbox!

Thanks,
Zack.

If you are going to chase more power, budget for a 6 speed.

Cheapest option, find a replacement 5 speed box that suits your rear diff. Spend time learning2drive. Don't smash gears for a while allowing you to save for better box/turbo upgrades etc etc etc.

Just rebuilt a sti 5 speed. Started out thinking just second but after strip down lots of other broken or chipped gears. decided to do all gears other than 5th & reverse, however, subaru have superseded fifth gear shaft resulting in a new 5th &rev as well.

about $3000 plus for parts only.

sorry for the bad news and hope yours isnt as bad inside.

Alot of food for thought, thanks a heap for all the comments. I have come across a cheap 6 spd from a S202 STI, do I need anything other then:

Gearbox
Diff
Tailshaft
Clutch kit

Cheers again guys!
Zack.

if you use the s202 rear diff, then you'll need the driveshafts and hubs too. As a part of a R180 conversion.

Otherwise find yourself a R160 3.9 Diff and its pretty much all bolt in.

You dont have to get a clutch kit. But its a good idea.

apart from the list you have up there, you will also need:

Shifter linkages and stick
6 speed gearknob
6 speed gearbox mount
6 speed clutch fork - must use this regardless of whether you re-use your current clutch or not.
4.7L of oil.

I have a practically brand new 6 speed shifter which did approx 11000 km for sale. I'm pretty sure Tuna has the gear knob to suit.

PM if interested.

I have bought the 6 speed 02 model from a S202 RA Spec C TY856WB2GA, Got the old 5 speed out today. Awaiting opinions on clutch condition, on weather or not to use the clutch that came with the 6 speed thats done 74,000kms or buy a replacement clutch and make sure its 100% to save time and money if it fails shortly in the future.

Then there is the diff issue, I could buy the R180 axles and hubs to suit from the same guy who had the 6speed. Or find a ring/pinion and make that fit into my R160. Or find a 3.9 R160 to slot in.
